Business Context
Remote and hybrid work models require employees to communicate effectively, maintain alignment, and build strong working relationships across distributed teams. Effective collaboration is essential for productivity, employee engagement, and successful onboarding.
New employees joining remote or hybrid teams may understand their role responsibilities but lack the collaboration behaviours needed to work effectively in distributed environments.
Common challenges include unclear communication, ineffective use of collaboration channels, difficulty building relationships remotely, and limited participation in virtual meetings.
These challenges can affect team alignment, onboarding effectiveness, and day-to-day collaboration.
Performance Gap
Current Behaviours
New employees may:
communicate reactively instead of proactively
choose communication channels without considering the situation
hesitate to ask questions or clarify expectations
participate passively in virtual meetings
Desired Behaviours
Employees should:
communicate clearly and proactively
select appropriate communication methods
clarify priorities and expectations
contribute effectively during virtual collaboration
I designed a scenario-based onboarding experience that helps new employees practise the communication and collaboration behaviours required for effective remote teamwork.
The experience supports learners in developing the ability to:
communicate clearly with colleagues
manage expectations proactively
select appropriate communication channels
participate effectively in virtual meetings
build professional relationships within distributed teams
Instructional Design Approach
The learning experience was designed around workplace application, decision-making, and behaviour change. The course was developed using:
Scenario-Based Learning
Learners make decisions in realistic workplace situations and receive immediate feedback.
Adult Learning Principles
Activities are relevant, practical, and connected to real workplace experiences.
Microlearning Design
Short modules and focused interactions support engagement and knowledge retention.
ADDIE Model
Applied throughout the analysis, design, development, and evaluation process.
Module 1: Understanding Remote Collaboration
Introduces remote teamwork expectations and common collaboration challenges.
Module 2: Building Trust Through Communication
Develops communication habits that support reliability and teamwork.
Module 3: Choosing the Right Communication Channel
Helps learners select appropriate tools for different workplace situations.
Module 4: Creating Connection in Remote Teams
Focuses on relationship building and team connection.
Module 5: Effective Virtual Meetings
Develops practical behaviours for productive online meetings.
The course includes a scenario-based final assessment designed to measure application of skills. The assessment evaluates the learner’s ability to make appropriate workplace decisions rather than recall information. If implemented in an organization, effectiveness could be evaluated through onboarding feedback, manager observations, employee confidence measures, and collaboration indicators.
Learners respond to realistic workplace situations involving:
communication decisions
priority management
collaboration behaviours
meeting participation
Assessment Format: 5 scenario questions
Passing Score: 80%
Why scenario-based learning?
Remote collaboration challenges are behavioural. Employees need opportunities to practise communication decisions in realistic workplace situations.
Why microlearning?
New employees complete onboarding alongside their daily responsibilities. Short focused sections support flexible learning and easier application.
