260. That's the number shown on the chronograph at the local indoor CQB arena tonight for my APS Mini Patriot M4. But the airsoft gun has shot at 330 feet-per-second (FPS) just two weeks before. And the gun has been newly built last month. That's a drastic FPS drop for an airsoft gun. What happened?

I'm obsessed to find out where the air is leaking. But before I can rebuild the gun, I need a chronograph; I need to be able to see the increase/decrease in FPS as I make changes. The most inexpensive chronograph is the Soft Air Swiss Arms BB Chronograph for around $40 on Amazon. However, I think I can do better than that.

I already have an Android phone. It could do almost anything, except cooking dinner. How can I make it a free chrono as well? That's where Chrono Connect Mobile Lite comes in the picture. It's a free Android app that is available on Google Play. You use it as a chronograph. So let's see how well it works. Comments & Discussion >>

I had made my own BB target trap several weeks ago. It makes shooting inside my garage or my backyard a breeze. It has a paper front, which makes a decently loud sound when the BB penetrates it. It seems perfect for the job. Being useable inside my three car garage allows me to chronograph at any time.

Lesson Learned

The first time I used Chrono Connect Mobile Lite, I had the target 19 feet away, the Android phone 2 feet from the gun. Chrono Connect Mobile Lite measured all three of my airsoft guns--HPEG, LPEG, and spring pistol--with very reasonable results (close to what the chrono at the local indoor field measured). So I was very happy with the set-up. But one day, I accidentally dry fired with the gun and Chrono Connect Mobile Lite still provided reasonable result! I was fabacasted.

When you launch Chrono Connect Mobile Lite, it immediately takes you to the chronograph. A "Start Monitoring" button at the bottom of the chronograph starts the sound detection. It will calculate up to three shots before turning the button off. The pro version of the app removes this limitation.

When the "De-Bouncing Effect" setting was set to "Strong" or "Very Strong", the velocity calculation was too low. When it is set to "Mild", the speed read average of 250 FPS as shown in the screen shot below. That value is 10 FPS lower than the chrono at the indoor CQB arena, but is sufficiently accurate for my needs.

I have also tested Chrono Connect Mobile Lite with my Colt 1911 Target spring pistol. I have never chrono'ed this pistol. However, the specification says it has a maximum energy of 0.3 joules. If you use the BB Pellet Energy Converter, you'll see that 0.3 joules with 0.2 gram BB's translates to 179.7 FPS.

Chrono Connect Mobile is a tool to measure the power of your airguns. It works as a real chronograph, measuring the speed of the pellets leaving the gun and displaying the results in a range of power values.

The simple answer is yes, but not for every gun. The majority of guns I have tested work well when used correctly. With accurate distance and pellet information Chrono Connect Mobile can give results within 10fps of the reading given by a mechanical/optical chronoscope.

Alternatives without a chronoscope Shoot into a yellow pages and count how many pages were shot through. Shoot at the ground and measure the 'mushroom' of the pellet. Shoot a coffee can. Did it go through 1 or 2 sides? Shoot a soda can in various places, if it goes through X place its X power.

As there are variables that are beyond our control you should not rely on Chrono Connect Mobile as your sole method of recording speed and power and should test the power of your gun using a real chronoscope if in any doubt.

Charge your Watch to 100% (Important!) To begin the process of setting up your watch link to your phone, you will need to charge your watch by plugging the micro-USB cable into the magnetic charging puck. You will also need to plug the micro-USB cable into a 5V USB power supply. (Power supply not included.) Applying the magnetic charging puck to the back of the watch body will charge it. It should automatically snap on due to the metal backing of the watch and the magnet built into the charging puck. Be sure the gold contacts visible on the watch connect to the gold prongs found on the charging pucks. It should look something like this:

5) Update the Chronomark Watch firmware via the Starfield Watch app. Once pairing has been completed, you should be prompted to update the firmware of your watch once the Bluetooth connection is completed.

Thought I would comment on my new Caldwell Chrono. Finally got to try it out a couple days ago, mostly worked good but had one(major) problem with it. This is the chrono that comes with 15' of audio cable so you can hook it up to your smartphone (either iphone or android) with a free app that displays the shot info, records strings and does the math for you, and can store or email data from your chrono session to yourself to review later. The chrono does have a display on the front that reads in FPS or MPS so you do not have to have a smartphone hooked to it to use it but it doesnt do anything else besides display the last shot fired.

The good news is the chrono worked perfectly from the first shot to the last shot, about 125 rounds, had one error message where the round was missed by one of the sensors, but that was me, I repositioned it and shot from a slight angle, so no fault of the equipment.

The bad new is the chrono would not talk to my iphone. The directions dont mention any certain order to hook the two together, but I tried every combination possible and nothing worked. The app wouldnt even acknowledge the chrono was hooked to it until I turned the phone off and on again, but even after it recognized the phone was connected it wouldnt read anything. I am going to try deleting the app and reinstalling it and see if that solves the problem but it will be a couple weeks before I can shoot over it again to see if that works. Half the reason I bought the Caldwell was because of the app so hopefully it will be up and running next time.

With the other end of the cable connected to the chronograph.... Try pushing or pulling the phone end of the cable in and out gradually while watching to see if icon changes from red to green. If no luck then call Battenfeld customer service and we'll send you a new tested cord and if that doens't work we can send you a new chronograph.

I really appreciate your help, I didnt realize you were affiliated. Of the other folks I've spoken to that have this chrono Im the only one that seems to have connection issues, I dont know if they are using 4s or 5 model iphones. I will double check the connections this evening to see if it helps. Again, thanks for your help.

In particular, would love to know how many strings the app can store(not email or text, as I don't have service at the range I shoot most often at), if it's available w/out the chrono plugged in (to review, and/or send after the range), and if it can be used with a tablet. Also interested in Android usage, as I went away from iPhones..

The app allows you to store as much data as your phone or tablet has available memory. Chances are you will long run out of ammo way before you run out of memory. This was the whole intent of our concept... Instead of duplicating the hardware that is already on your smart device we decided to leverage it instead by allowing the chronograph to use it for display, storage, computation, and communication.

Now that I have full connectivity I must say this is a pretty slick setup. Setup the chrono, attach the cord to the phone, and start shooting. You can put load data in, run a string and the app does all the math for you. From there you can keep your data stored and/or email it to yourself. The chrono and phone were connected for over an hour continually yesterday, and it had little effect on battery life so no problems there. I must say I am completely satisfied with my Caldwell chrono. 006ab0faaa
