Humans never existed. The burden of morality fell to predators.
Herald, a young Australian magpie raised by a raven and taught the principles of the Breath, believes that dignity lies not in appetite but in restraint. Sent across the southern lands to share those teachings, he finds a world of intelligent creatures struggling to reconcile survival with conscience.
When a devastating wildfire destroys an entire colony, leaders from across the land gather to forge a new order. What begins as a sincere effort to preserve peace gradually hardens into an expanding system of laws that ignores the realities of life. Predators starve. Communities fracture. Those who preach virtue increasingly fail to live by it themselves.
As hunger, loss, and disillusionment close in around him, Herald is forced to confront questions no law can answer: How much harm can a good creature endure before it breaks? Can mercy survive failure? And what becomes of a society that values purity more than life?
