Our Chromosome Biology Lab (CBL) at IISER Pune, studies chromosomes - the threads of life. Human chromosomes, are organized as chromosome territories in the nucleus. Chromosomes find their address in the nucleus reproducibly after each cell division cycle, much like how localities within a city have a "zip-code" associated with it. Nuclear locations of chromosome territories also determine their activity and function. We have found that chromosomes shift to altered nuclear locations in response to cues from their external environment. The focus of our research is to unravel the molecular mechanisms of how chromosome territories are organized in the nucleus and its function in normal and cancer cells. In addition, we are investigating into the mechanisms that induce nuclear and chromosomal aberrations in targeted knockdowns, models of mechanical stress, Epithelial to Mesenchymal Transitions (EMT) and DNA Damage Repair (DDR).Â
