Brief History

The Tuba Central National High School (TCNHS) was established by virtue of Republic Act 9545, which was signed into law on March 24, 2009. Prior to the enactment of RA 9545, the school existed as the Tuba National High School-Poblacion Extension, which was opened on June 19, 2002. As an annex school, TNHS-Poblacion was then under the over-all management of Tuba National High School with its main campus at Nangalisan, Tuba. During its first two years of operation, the TNHS-Extension utilized the barangay hall and the Senior Citizens building as temporary classrooms. In 2004, the school had its first two-storey four-classroom and science laboratory building, courtesy of the then Secondary Education Development and Improvement Project (SEDIP) and the Municipal Government of Tuba, which provided the necessary equity or counterpart.

Located about six kilometers from Baguio City Proper, the school occupies a land area of more or less 5,000 square meters, which is owned by the Tuba Municipal Government but was turned over to the Department of Education (DepEd) through a Contract of Usufruct executed in 2003.

In its early years of operation, TNHS-Extension started putting in place school-based management structures but the absence of a regular budget hindered the realization of this initiative. Recognizing this limitation, the school management together with the local government unit and the barangay council lobbied for the passage of a long time bill for the establishment of Tuba Central National High School. Although this bill failed enactment during the 13th Congress, then Benguet Congressman Samuel M. Dangwa re-filed this during the 14th Congress. These efforts paid off with the passage of RA 9545 making TCNHS the first newly-legislated high school in the Cordillera region during the 14th Congress.

From 2009-2010, however, the school still operated without a separate budget for personnel services and maintenance although TCNHS was already officially listed in the family of regular high schools in Benguet. The school management thus had to submit proposals, which eventually led to the inclusion of a regular funding for personnel services and MOOE in the 2011 General Appropriations Act (GAA). At present, the school has 13 personnel in its plantilla comprising one (1) school principal and twelve (12) teachers. The school has also obtained regular allotment for MOOE.

Other notable developments include the construction of additional facilities and the continuing rise in enrollment. From a population of only 84 students during its first year of operation in 2002, the total enrollment in 2012 reaches 340 students.

Being the only public high school right at the center of Tuba town, the school management considers the eventual growth of TCNHS as the premier school of the town especially when grades 11-12 or the so-called senior high school under the K-12 program would begin in 2016. With the planned urbanization expansion of Baguio City under the much publicized Baguio-La Trinidad-Itogon-Sablan-Tuba-Tublay (BLISTT) growth quadrangle, migration and movement of people into Tuba are expected. This would in turn result to more increase in student population.
