For morning work, Ms. Christine created these Math Art Coloring Sheets. Using her own spontaneous style of art, she fills in the shapes with math sentences and correlates the answer to a color. Ms. Christine allows younger students to cut out their finished work so they can hone in on their independent fine motor skills.
One of Ms. Christine's favorite drawing activities is what she calls Silly Sketches. Ms. Christine would ask her class to draw a picture based on a very silly description. This session's subject was "a sad potato in the oven." Drawing these whacky images helps them use their skills of inference, awareness, and comprehension. It also builds their creativity and imagination! As they're drawing, they indirectly answer questions like: What makes something looks sad? Why is the potato sad? Would the oven be hot or cold? Where are ovens usually located?
Around Thanksgiving time, focus is often shifted on gratefulness and togetherness. Ms. Christine wanted her students to express what they were thankful for, and she posted their responses in her classroom by stapling all thirty plates (forks, knives, and spoons) to recycled fabric.
