I am a professor of economics, emeritus, at the University of St. Gallen and a research fellow of CEPR, CESifo, SFI (Swiss Finance Institute) and of the Oxford Centre for Business Taxation. Important stages of my academic career include a doctorate in economics at the University of Innsbruck in 1987, a Habilitation at the University of Vienna in 1995, followed by a full professor position at the University of Saarland in 1997. Since 2000, I am a full professor of economics at the University of St. Gallen with a specialization in public economics. I was Director of the Institute for Advanced Studies in Vienna from June 2012 to December 2014. Since end of January 2024, I am retired (emeritus) with an ongoing research program. My research interests cover tax theory and policy and other areas of public economics with a focus on business taxation; economic growth; finance, banking, and capital markets; and recently environmental economics with a focus on climate change.
