Setting up the Plots
Using 40 flags, outline plots and mark where samples were taken. Additionally, get 8 poles to mark the edges of the plots.
Take 4 samples per plot and 3 plots in total. Set out 36 flags to mark. The samples are named by the plot number, then a, b, c, or d. Mark the flags with the Day, then with the sample. (For ex: Day 1 3B.)
At the site, use 4 poles to form a square with sides 2.5 meters long. Each pole will mark a corner of the square.
Repeat step 3 for one other site. The last site (3rd plot) will be the control plot. To mark off the control plot, instead of using poles, use flags. Each flag will mark a corner of the plot and the plot will also be 2.5 m x 2.5 m.
Getting Soil Samples
Using labeled flags marked with the sample Id and day, 4 randomly selected areas within each plot were sampled. Each area was marked with the corresponding flag.
Using a soil corer samples were collected. Each sample was taken 15 cm deep by penetrating and twisting the corer into the soil.
Each sample is placed into a plastic bag and the steps are repeated for each plot for a total of 3 days.
This map indicates the two sites used for this study. Research plots 1 and 2 were set in Site one and our control polt, plot 3, was set in Site 2. Within Site 1 there was a stream and two trees; Plot 1 was marked within Quadrant 1 and Plot 2 was marked within quadrant 4. Within Site 2, there was a tree near where Plot 3 samples were taken.
