I’ve just released a small composing tool called ChordLeaps that some of you here might enjoy experimenting with.

It’s a simple generator that creates two chords and a leap between them — essentially a harmonic jump that you can use as the starting point for a cue, sketch, or harmonic exploration.

It began life as a private tool in my composing toolbox (originally called TriadLeaps), but over time it grew beyond triads and now includes things like:

• triads
• suspended chords
• added-note chords
• quartal-ish structures
• a few extended harmonies

The idea is not to generate full progressions, but to create unexpected harmonic gestures that can kickstart an idea.

I built the interface like a slot machine — you hit the button and it spins out a harmonic leap. Sometimes it produces something strange, sometimes surprisingly inspiring.
