A wonton font (also known as Chinese, chopstick, chop suey,[1] or kung-fu) is a mimicry typeface with a visual style intended to express an East Asian, or more specifically, Chinese aesthetic.

The first commercial typeface of this style was patented in 1883 by the Cleveland Type Foundry,[1] under the name "Chinese",[2] which became "Mandarin" in the 1950s.[2] Many variations of this style of font have been created by typeface designers since its inception.[1]

Some Asian-Americans find wonton fonts amusing or humorous, while others find them offensive, insulting, or racist.[3][4] The font's usage is often criticized when paired with caricatures that hark back to the Yellow Peril images of the late 19th and 20th century. In 2002, the clothing retailer Abercrombie & Fitch faced controversy when it produced a series of T-shirts with buck-toothed images and wonton font slogans.[5] The Chicago Cubs were hit with backlash from the East Asian Americans after a similarly offensive T-shirt was produced by an independent vendor in 2008.[6] The questionable use of such fonts was the subject of an article in the Wall Street Journal by cultural commentator Jeff Yang.[7]

I observed one lady in Taipei put her chopsticks in the little canvas sleeve and she held them to her heart and then began to slowly jump up and down with joy. She was so excited I thought she was going to wet her pants, or knock herself out with her purse flopping all over the place. She had a 5-star dentist smile for all to see.

Behind this invention is a question that has obsessed Chinese-language font designers for 40 years: Just how small can Chinese digital fonts get before they become illegible, or worse, aesthetically unappealing?

GB/T 5199 is something of a historical outlier, however, as Chinese font designers spent the next several years working out how to cram more details into smaller squares while maintaining legibility. In the process, the delicate Songti elements favored by the Shanghai Printing Technology Research Institute were discarded in favor of the blockier and more consistent strokes of typefaces like Heiti.

A great little noodle house around the corner from my house presented the solution the day they brought out a pair of chopsticks modified to be kid-friendly. To help other people who might run into this same chopsticks problem, I put together a short video on how to make chopsticks for kids. All you need is some of those wooden chopsticks that come in a paper sleeve and a thin rubber band. The video tells the rest of the story.

For those that might be curious, the font I used is called Chinese Takeaway from the free fonts collection at PizzaDude.dk. The music is parts of two traditional Chinese pieces which loosely translate to Fishing Boats Return and Rain falling on Ba Jiao.

- Unless specified, we'll go with our most popular chopstick style #3 and font style #1.

- We can customize each chopstick's engraving to be different. Extra cost dependent on number of chopsticks.

- We can also engrave both the front and back of the chopsticks, as well as on the front of the slip cover. Extra cost dependent on number of chopsticks.

The chopsticks are beautifully done, and we can't wait to share them with our guests. A mock-up image was provided very quickly after we submitted our order - the engraving is lovely, and the silk slips add an elegant touch! 17dc91bb1f
