We met with Choice Art Educators from around the world for our annual business meeting at NAEA in Minneapolis this April. We awarded our first ever Teacher of the Year awards to Larry West and DJ Osmack. We also celebrated our outgoing President Julie Jacobusse and welcomed Brooke Brei as the incoming Co-President Elect. Thanks to everyone who attended and provided feedback to help serve your needs this year.
This year, in Louisville, we had some great discussions with those who attended the business meeting. There were so many great suggestions and new faces looking to get involved. It was so invigorating and we look forward to the new opportunities those partnerships will bring.
Choice helped to bring Bee back to the passion and the validation that she needed in her career. Her students have started a chain reaction of first becoming her biggest supporters, and then their parents, then their teachers, and finally her Admin. So much so that she was nominated for Teacher of the Year in Minnesota in 2022.
Choice saved her sanity and gave her students the ownership over their creativity.
Choice Art has been offering Kim’s students the opportunity to develop life skills that extend far beyond the art studio. They are learning to navigate challenges, face setbacks, problem solve and build resilience to help empower them into young adults.
By embracing choice, Kim is fostering autonomy and encouraging a mindset of exploration where students can discover more about themselves in the process.
Pam is the department chair of a 100% Choice Based Visual Arts Department. She is inspired by the way her students are creative thinkers, problem solvers and excited to bring their ideas to the studio because they know they will be valued by their peers.
Choice has given her students a great sense of pride and accomplishment that gives them confidence beyond the classroom walls. Which in turn has given Pam plenty of talking points when it comes to her own awards and accolades.
My artwork and I have been covered and interviewed in many newspapers and magazines. I was TAEA’s middle school Art Teacher of the Year for 2022-23. I have added content in the TAEA publication called "TRENDS." Most of my writing is in the form of presentations for sharing and helping upcoming Artist Educators. I have embarked on a couple of books... yet to be completed. The first is called "West Ramblings" and the Second is simply called "Contrast."
