Xylodia — The City Beneath the Smog

Xylodia is a sprawling urban fantasy metropolis where modern civilization and the supernatural coexist in fragile secrecy. To ordinary humans, the city is nothing more than a polluted megacity of steel towers, overcrowded subway systems, flickering neon signs, and endless rain-soaked streets. But beneath its gray exterior lies a hidden ecosystem of magic, spirits, death, and corruption. The city exists in layers, each one intertwined with the others like overlapping dimensions hidden beneath the same skyline.

The Three Layers of Xylodia 

1. Xylodia Prime — The Surface

The Surface is the version of the city visible to humanity. It is a modern urban jungle dominated by corporations, apartment blocks, cafes, industrial districts, and constant smog drifting through the skyline.

Most humans are completely unaware of the supernatural forces surrounding them. Strange phenomena are dismissed as exhaustion, hallucinations, pollution, faulty technology, or urban legends. The city itself encourages disbelief, almost as if reality bends to protect the secret.

Despite appearing technologically advanced, Xylodia Prime feels emotionally stagnant. Seasons barely shift. Sunlight rarely reaches the streets clearly. Nature struggles to survive beneath layers of concrete and industrial decay.

Yet hidden among ordinary crowds are beings known as The Awakened, blending seamlessly into society while concealing their true identities behind magical disguises known as Glamour.

2. The Hollow — The Underworld Office

Buried beneath the subway tunnels and forgotten infrastructure lies The Hollow, a surreal bureaucratic underworld governed by the mysterious Thanatos Corporation.

Unlike traditional depictions of the afterlife, death in Xylodia is processed like corporate administration. Reapers operate within a rigid hierarchy of departments, quotas, reports, and soul-processing systems. Souls are categorized, archived, transferred, and recycled with disturbing efficiency.

The Hollow is illuminated by dim fluorescent lights, endless office corridors, humming elevators, and enormous records halls filled with files documenting every death within the city.

Flowers hold symbolic importance here. Different floral classifications are used to label emotional residue, karmic debt, and soul conditions during processing.

Though cold and procedural, The Hollow exists to preserve balance. Without its systems, the city’s spiritual ecosystem would collapse entirely.

3. The Rift — The In-Between

The Rift is a fractured dimension existing between reality itself — a broken space hidden within shadows, reflections, abandoned buildings, and gaps in perception. It is unstable, constantly shifting, and heavily contaminated by supernatural corruption.

This realm serves as the breeding ground of The Rot, as well as a sanctuary for Devils and other malevolent entities that reject the balance maintained by the city.

Time behaves inconsistently within The Rift. Architecture twists unnaturally. Rusted structures fuse with organic matter while black sludge pulses like a living organism. The deeper one travels into the Rift, the more reality deteriorates.

The Awakened

The Awakened are supernatural beings hidden among humanity. They include High Fae, Reapers, Demi-Humans, Devils, Guardians, Occultists and Mythical hybrids and ancient spirits. To live within Xylodia, they rely on Glamour, a magical masking technique that hides their inhuman traits. Wings become tattoos or shadows. Horns vanish beneath illusions. Animalistic features are disguised as natural beauty or eccentricity. 

However, Awakened beings can recognize one another instinctively through subtle supernatural signs glowing irises, distorted shadows, flickering wings, magical scent, unnatural body temperature, or the pressure of aura itself. The city’s hidden society operates through secrecy, alliances, and fragile unspoken rules.

The Laws of Secrecy

Humans must never learn the truth.

This rule exists because human fear directly feeds the city’s corruption. When ordinary humans witness supernatural phenomena and experience intense shock or terror, their subconscious releases a dark metaphysical substance that nourishes The Rot. In severe cases, The Rot can instantly emerge from nearby shadows and attack indiscriminately.

Because of this:

• supernatural incidents must be concealed immediately,

• memories are often manipulated,

• evidence is erased,

• and public magical battles are considered catastrophic offenses.

The city survives only because the illusion of normalcy remains intact.

Linked Fate

Among the rarest phenomena in Xylodia is the formation of a Soul Bond.

A Soul Bond occurs when an Awakened and a human share a deep emotional resonance known as Linked Fate. Through this connection, the Awakened may reveal their true form without immediately triggering disaster. However, the bond comes with dangerous consequences. Once established, the Awakened’s magic becomes directly tied to the human’s emotional state.

Guardians

Guardians and benevolent beings draw strength from: trust, warmth, affection, and acceptance. If their bonded human begins fearing them, their magic deteriorates. Their internal flowers wilt, mana weakens, and their bodies slowly collapse.

Devils & Occultists

Dark entities function oppositely. Fear strengthens them. Anxious or terrified humans act as catalysts that amplify a Devil’s aggression, obsession, and destructive power, often pushing them toward instability.

The Ultimate Risk

If the human rejects the Awakened entirely or betrays their secret, the Soul Bond shatters. When this occurs, both individuals become exposed to The Rot. The city’s corruption marks them as prey, causing shadows and Rot manifestations to converge upon them with lethal intensity. In Xylodia, intimacy itself can become a supernatural contract.

The Smog Core

Floating invisibly above the city is the Smog Core, an enormous mass of condensed dark energy visible only to the Awakened.

It is formed from greed, pollution, hatred, emotional decay, exploitation, and humanity’s collective negativity. The Smog Core traps clean spiritual energy inside the city like a suffocating dome. It prevents natural renewal, weakens magic tied to nature, and disrupts the changing of seasons.

The Rot

The Rot is the physical manifestation of the Smog Core’s corruption. It appears as black sludge, rusted metallic vines, fungal growths, oily shadows, industrial decay fused with living tissue. The Rot spreads through abandoned subway systems, alleyways, rooftops, and forgotten infrastructure. It consumes life energy and reduces organic matter into brittle ash. It is especially attracted to beings with powerful souls — particularly the Awakened. The Rot is not mindless. It hunts.

Human Life as Energy

Human existence generates metaphysical resources vital to the city’s hidden ecosystem.

The Pulse

The Pulse is pure life energy generated by living souls.Guardians use it to heal the city and restore nature. Devils seek it to enhance their own power. Because of this, humans unknowingly exist at the center of an invisible supernatural economy.

Karmic Debt

When humans die naturally, their spiritual residue becomes Karmic Debt, processed by Thanatos Corporation within The Hollow.This system ensures souls are recycled safely without contaminating reality.

Corrupted Debt

When souls are stolen prematurely through violence, fear, or occult rituals, they become Corrupted Debt. Unlike regulated soul processing, Corrupted Debt destabilizes the city and dramatically accelerates the spread of The Rot. Many Devils deliberately harvest Corrupted Debt to increase their personal strength.

Hidden Sanctuaries

Echo Cafe

Scattered throughout the city are hidden establishments known as Echo Cafes — supernatural safe zones disguised as ordinary bars, jazz lounges, bookstores, or coffee shops.Only those capable of “Seeing” can enter fully. These locations serve as information hubs, resting points, neutral territories, and shelters from The Rot. Inside, the atmosphere feels strangely warm and alive compared to the suffocating streets outside.

Virenshade

Hidden within one of Xylodia’s older districts is Virenshade, a cramped flower shop owned by the High Fae, Ren Virendel. Unlike the rest of the city, Virenshade contains clean air, living greenery, and traces of genuine spring. Flowers bloom unnaturally vibrant within its walls, protected from the Smog Core’s influence. The shop functions as a sanctuary, a research site, and one of the last remaining places in Xylodia capable of nurturing true natural magic. Some Awakened believe Virenshade may hold the key to restoring the city’s lost seasons before the Rot consumes everything entirely.
