Force & Motion-5
Everything in our Solar System is controlled by force. Planets and other space objects revolve around the Sun. Planes fly, trains go, and living things move as they interact and survive. How is this possible? Read the facts and complete the activities to find out!
Important Vocabulary
Motion-a change in position relative to a point of reference, a change in speed, or a change in distance
Position-where something is located in relation to a reference point
Reference Point-An object is in motion if it changes position relative to a reference point. Objects that are fixed – such as a building, a tree, or a sign - make good reference points.
Speed-The rate at which an object moves through time is known as its speed. You can find it by dividing the distance by the time and giving the answer in units. For example Speed=200 miles divided by 4 hours=50 miles per hour.
Essential Understandings
A force is a push or a pull. Forces start, stop, and change motion.
Objects at rest or objects in motion stay that way until a force acts upon them.
The more mass an object has, the more force will be needed to move, stop, or change its direction.
Friction , gravity, and contact forces all stop, start, and change the direction of objects.
For every force there is an equal and opposite force also described as what goes up must come down.
Speed = distance/time
