Many family members are forced with the sad loss of losing a family member to being incarcerated. The loss of losing someone to the system, at a quick level is something that can cause many families and children, emotional trauma. When someone is taken into the system. there is usually no warning most of the time and no time to prepare your children for what will happen. When they know about the possible arrest, families are able to prepare their children that one of their family members will be gone for awhile. This can cause the students a lot of stress as well. Students can notice easily when someone is trouble by the way they are being talked to or acted towards.
Children also are faced with dealing these emotions at a fast rate. The child may have some confusion about what truly happened to their parents or family members. If the child isn't being told the whole truth because of their age, or the family doesn't want them to know, they can become confused about what is true and what isn't. All of these emotions can bottle up for children and can cause a decreasing rate in their expression to their parents and peers.
When a child is faced with dealing with a parent who has been arrested or incarcerated, many students suffer with their grades, academic performance and engaging with their students. All of these can negatively impact the students performance levels and their attendance rates. The emotional toll of having a parent incarcerated which can affect students in many different ways.
This can also influence behavior changes in the students. They can stop participating in class, have conflicts with their peers and teachers, as well of feeling embarrassed about the fact that their parents are in jail. These are all things that are expected as students when they are dealing with all of these different types of emotions.
