Our Story: The Beginning of the Children's Clothing Closet Ministry (CCCM)
In 2012, while the North Durham Summit Church was worshiping on West Club Boulevard, God united two women with a shared desire to help families in need by providing clothing for their children. Debbie McClung, who had recently moved to Durham and had previously directed a children’s clothing ministry, and Marcia Beard, a long-time Durham resident with many local contacts, wanted to support foster families and others by offering essential clothing for their children. Through conversations and prayers, the Children’s Clothing Closet Ministry (CCCM) was born.
Growth and Blessings
The CCCM began in a small room in the Educational Building of the church on West Club Boulevard. As the ministry grew, God blessed it with more space and dedicated volunteers. Today, the CCCM operates at Braggtown Baptist Church on Roxboro Road, where a large portion of the lower floor is used for sorting, organizing, and storing clothes. This generous gift of space has been instrumental in the growth of the CCCM.
Serving the Community
The ministry's first clients were referred by social workers in local elementary schools. As word spread throughout the Durham community, the CCCM served 1,061 children in 2023. Each child, from newborn to size 16, receives clothing, coats, hats, gloves, shoes, new socks, and underwear.
Generous Contributions
Donations come from various individuals and groups. To fund the purchase of new socks and underwear for the children, the CCCM holds yard sales twice a year. Additionally, there have been generous donations from supporters of the ministry.
Prayers and Support
As families come to receive clothing, volunteer translators engage with them and ask for prayer requests. These requests are then shared with all the volunteers, who pray over the families.
Giving Glory to God
We give all glory to God for sustaining the CCCM for 13 years and for the fellowship and friendships that have blossomed through this ministry. The CCCM's mission is to serve God by helping those in need. We praise God for touching the lives of those who serve and those who receive.
