1. Smart Firefighting Helmet With Integrated Millimetre Wave Sensors For SLAM
Emergency Response Collaboration
This has got to be one of the most challenging and very exciting projects that I have worked on yet!
I and my team got to experiment with and utilize novel sensing technologies for Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM).
In Partnership with the City of Oshawa and Oshawa Fire Service, I led multidisciplinary engineering team of six in designing and developing a Smart Firefighting Helmet with Integrated Millimeter Wave Sensors for SLAM.
The helmet serves as a navigation system for firefighters in an unknown environment.
It scans its surrounding in real-time utilizing the sensors
With the data gathered, it creates a map of the environment and also locates the firefighters in that generated map.
FunFact: This project evolved into a successful start up Hibou Systems.
Core Skills Demonstrated: Robotic Operating System (ROS), Programming, C++, Python, Mapping, Localization, Real-Time Data Analysis, SLAM and Project Management.
2. Autonomous Package Retrieval Robot
Core Skills Demonstrated: CAD, Python, Mechatronics Design, Control Systems, Machine Learning, Computer Vision, Embedded Systems, Robotics, and Automation
Unmanned Ground Robot for Package Delivery
My all time favorite project! I learnt a ton working on this from ideation to the final design and demonstration. It was my most fun and very tasking project that had to be completed during the PANDEMIC.
It is a mechatronic system comprising of autonomous navigation, robot's localization, computer vision, object detection and remote base station communication to solve the real-world complex task of package retrieval and delivery.
Approach
Robot's navigation - Optical Encoders and PID control
Localization - Wheel Odometry
Package Identification - Overhead Camera
Object detection - OpenCV (blob detection) programmed in Python
Communication - Bluetooth using C++ and Arduino
Package retrieval - Gripper actuated with Stepper Motor
3. High Precision Laparoscopic Forceps Controlled and Actuated By A Linear Solenoid
Core Demonstrated Skills: Mathematical Modelling (MATLAB & Simulink), Actuator design, Electromagnetic Energy Conversion, Power unit design and implementation, and Control system (PIDs).
Actuators and Power Electronics Implementation
Laparoscopy is an operation performed in the abdomen using small incisions with the aid of a camera. There are a number of advantages to the patient with laparoscopic surgery versus the more common, open procedure such as reduced pain due to smaller incisions, reduced hemorrhaging and shorter recovery time.
The key element is the use of a laparoscope, a long fiber optic cable system which allows viewing of the affected area by snaking the cable from a more distant, but more easily accessible location.
In this project, a linear solenoid was designed and modelled to control the orientation and insertion depth of laparoscopic forceps during surgery. Concepts explored include electromagnetism, controller design, and force/position control.
4. Tri-Stack Rover: Driverless Delivery Vehicle (DDV)
For Product/Merchandise Delivery
The largest supermarket grocery chain store is facing fierce competition from online retailers. In a bid to improve its competitiveness, decides to expand to online services. This is an expensive move!
To eliminate the shipping and delivery costs of online services, the retail giant consults an engineering firm (my team) to design a driverless delivery vehicle.
WorkFlow
Once an order is placed online, a sales associate packages the order and loads it into the DDV for delivery.
The DDV navigates autonomously to the desired location of the consumer.
Upon arrival, a password protected notification alerts the consumer for pick-up
Final design consists of 3 stackable drawers, LIDAR, Stereo Camera, Ultrasonic Sensors, and Short Range Cameras.
