In 2020-2021, with the donated help of professional landscape designers, a full "Vision Plan" for the entire school yard was mapped out to express the needs and desires of the school community as gathered from surveys and class projects. Bringing these dreams to fruition is an ongoing process expected to take 5-10 years depending on funding and other resources. Every step counts, so jump in to contribute however you can!
A vibrant, lush school playground with less pavement.
Opportunities for children to sit, seek shelter from sunshine and rain, interact with and learn from nature, and experience the countless benefits of feeling a sense of belonging to place.
A landscape that utilizes drought-resistant native plants and strategic design to ensure minimal upkeep, environmental responsibility, and homage to the First Peoples who resided here.
Colorful, interactive art installations to promote physical, mental and emotional wellbeing.
Improved/updated areas for sports (basketball, kickball, etc.).
A planning and implementation process that includes all stakeholders...students, teachers, staff, after-school programs, and the wider community.
Add soil amendment at each tree well to nutrify plantings and enhance soil aeration and moisture retention.
Design, secure funds for, and install fencing on the uphill side of the 3 tree wells next to the school gym as protection against balls and foot traffic. Replace existing temporary fencing around Heritage Oak tree well by playground with more permanent, secure structure.
Design, secure funds for, and install benches on the downhill side of the 3 tree wells next to the school gym as additional protection against foot traffic and to provide much-needed additional seating.
Fill all tree wells with new plantings, in alignment with natural/native ecosystem patterns and in consideration of disturbed land conditions, climate change, and community needs.
Each of these phases will require a group effort to pull off, so let us know how you might want to help.
This is a project currently being planned in partnership with the Lower Columbia Estuary Partnership, Depave and PPS. It involves the removal of ~5000 sf of asphalt along the northern and eastern borders of the school yard to create a rain garden for on-site stormwater management (see #4 on Vision Plan map above). Volunteer needs are TBD and depend on direction from partners listed here.
