Chico High Swimming

Swim Season 2020/2021

Chico High Swim Family,

I am happy to share that the Northern Section CIF met today and released an approved calendar with start and end dates for swimming. We have been approved as a Spring Sport for this years swim season.

I am not entirely sure of our practice start date at this point, but here are some decided upon dates.

Competition Start Date March 29th

League Competition End Date May 21st

Section Final Concluded by May 29th

State Final Date June 5

We will start to work on practice and meet schedules. As soon as I know more, I will share. One of the best things you can do at this point is to get your physical done (the school will not be holding physical nights this year) and to get the online CHS Athletic Clearance done. You can find the link on the CHS athletic page.

I look forward to the possibilities of what this season will bring.

2020/2021 SWIM SEASON

Dear Swim Families,

I wanted to give you an update on what has been happening around High School Swimming. We as EAL Coaches met with Scott Fairley the EAL Athletic Commissioner last Thursday to discuss the upcoming season. Let me begin by saying that everything is up in the air and no matter what we decide, we have to wait to see what is going to happen.

It was the position of several coaches at the meeting that swimming should “go on ahead” for the fall. This makes sense given that club teams and schools are forging ahead in Redding. For us in Butte County, swimming in the Fall would mean that we have to wait until October 1st to get in the water, with championships in 2 weeks, division 1 and masters in 3. We would not be able to travel as a team to get to the locations of those meets. It would mean only being able to have 1 swimmer per lane for practice (CIF Stage 2 regulations) and trying to accommodate 100+ swimmers between PV and Chico at the Bidwell Pool. We made our case for pushing swimming to the spring in hopes that we will have a chance at a season.

Mr. Fairley heard our concerns and the Redding coaches did as well. Our push for the spring was supported and now the proposal moves on to the NSCIF (Northern Section) Committee to makes its recommendations on September 30th and then it will need to go to the Board of Managers on October 28th. If we do move to a spring season it is my understanding that it would only be for this year. We would need to revisit this issue with NSCIF in the future.

I am so excited at the possibility of a season this year. I’m sure we can all relate to how important it is to be together!
