If you have a tiny back yard, a mobile coop that you can move around the yard if necessary would be a good option.
A mobile coop may be better for small groups of chickens, but if you want to become serious about egg production, you'll need a more substantial housing structure. Because fixed coops might be more expensive, it's a good idea to plan ahead of time before constructing one.
It's a terrific idea to provide some of the home comforts that most birds enjoy, such as a perch. To boost egg or chick production, you want your chickens, both hens and roosters, to be as comfortable and happy as possible. There's nothing like fresh eggs for your meals, and with a happy flock of hens, you're nearly guaranteed to get many.
For every 5 or more chickens, it's a good idea to give at least one nesting location. The size of the nesting place does not have to be big; for most chickens, a 12 inch square by 4 inch deep box will suffice. Chickens love to dig and seek for worms, so an open floor is great for them. Your hens will like having access to the sun's warmth, so keep in mind that you'll need to provide a warm coop and regulate the temperature.
Any good chicken coop begins with careful planning and consideration of the chickens' needs in order for them to have a happy and productive existence.
