We're inspired by the success and popularity of other greenways in the region.
The Swamp Rabbit Trail runs 28 miles on old railway beds, connecting the towns of Greenville and Traveler's Rest. The Swamp Rabbit Trail has been credited with revitalizing the small town of Traveler's Rest and increasing overall sales in area businesses from 30-85%. It has been described as one of South Carolina's most popular outdoor destinations, attributed with bringing $7 million annually in revenue to Greenville county.
Once the Swamp Rabbit Trail was installed and foot traffic increased, many small businesses along the rail line switched their main entrances from facing the road to facing the greenway.
“People who visit are enthralled. You can go into the local coffee shop, meet the owner, they remember your name, and you feel connected to the community. We’ve had more tourism in the last 10 or 15 years, bringing people who love the outdoors. They come here, they eat, shop, and find a place of rest.”
Brandy Amidon, Mayor, Travelers Rest, South Carolina
The Mountain Goat Trail is a pleasant rail trail winding through downtown Sewanee, the University of the South, and parts of Grundy County, TN. The Mountain Goat allows pedestrians to travel close by main roadways, but safely separated in a tunnel of forest. Much of the trail is paved and accessible by foot, bike, stroller, wheelchair, and rollerblades.
“The Mountain Goat Trail is such a visible, accessible beacon of the social, health and economic benefits of land conservation.”
Liz McLaurin, President and CEO, The Land Trust for Tennessee
The Eureka Trail connects Athens and Englewood by foot, bike, and horse. It follows a gentle path along a creek through woods and fields and has become beloved by locals and visitors.
“We regularly draw users from across the Southeast.”
Austin Fesmire, Director of Parks and Recreation, Athens, Tennessee
