Mangrove Discovery Staycation
Balancing Sustainable Tourism and Mangrove Conservation in
Kampung Sungai Melayu
Mangrove Discovery Staycation is a two-storey sustainable visitor center integrated with accommodation, designed to facilitate learning about the eco-environment. The project locate at Kampung Sungai Melayu, a fishermen village surrounded with mangrove forest. It blends learning, adventure, and relaxation, turning visitors into active participants in the story of the mangrove forest. The programmes of this project not only enhance visitor’s environmental knowledges but to boost socio-economic of Kampung Sungai Melayu.
Mangrove tree serve as storm barrier reduce 70% of wind speed, providing low natural ventilation within the site. Additionally, the complex root systems and soil condition also provide challenge in design. However, these can be overcome with right approach and strategies. In terms of carbon sequestration loss, the mangrove seedlings offsetting the initial carbon loss and providing long-term environmental benefits. By minimizing the impact of the sensitive mangrove environment, everything of the buildings from the architecture to construction propose using ecological, sustainable practices. This proposal can contribute to coastal development and serve as a model for environmental conservation and sustainable design practice.
