Call for Papers

Call for participation

There is increasing critique of the ethics of tech companies, ranging from how they design their products to their choices of clients and partners, and the systemic biases introduced by AI and data-driven technologies. Organizations like Institute for the Future and Omidyar Network have developed ethical frameworks and toolkits for organizations to build ethics into their culture or processes, with the goal of creating products that respect human rights. Some tech companies have announced their own ethical design principles and shared resources (e.g., Google, Microsoft, SAP, IBM).

Goals

We are organizing a one-day workshop at CHI 2019 to analyze and learn from the over 20 ethical frameworks, toolkits, checklists, and principles. In this workshop, we will:

    • Develop clear definitions for terms like “ethics,” “bias,” and “fairness.”
    • Address how these tools result in more ethical decision making and product development
    • Compare and contrast the tools
    • Hear practical examples from organizations that have implemented them
    • Evaluate their success and failure.

Following the workshop, we will publish a white paper summarizing insights and recommendations.

Submissions

To be included in the workshop, participants are asked to submit a 2-4 page paper that describes their experience creating and/or implementing ethical tools. We are seeking case studies, metrics used, lessons learned, and/or recommendations. Accepted submissions will be presented during the workshop. For each of the accepted submissions, at least one author must attend the workshop and at least one day of CHI 2019 conference.

Email papers to kbaxter@salesforce.com. Contributions must be submitted on or before February 12, 2019. Participants will be notified of acceptance on or before March 1, 2019.
