The Hispanic Serving Institution sometimes referred to as AVANZA, at UCD, is a federally-designated institution of higher learning that has a full-time equivalent enrollment of undergraduates of at least 25% Hispanic students. This designation enables institutions to apply for critical funding to support student success, innovation, and institutional transformation.
AVANZA represents our intent to continue to support and invest in our Rising Scholars. Currently, UC Davis enrolls the second highest number of Chicanx/Latinx students in the UC system (second only to UC Riverside) and we serve more than 8000 Chicanx/Latinx undergraduate students, our values and notions of servingness are both foundational to our identity and independent of external designations or recognitions.

✽HSI Undergraduate Advisory Board
The HSI Undergraduate Advisory Board consists of Undergraduate students who advise the HSI director on initiatives that impact the academic student experience on a variety of topics, which include but are not limited to recruitment, student enrollment, research and teaching and learning, diversity, retention, campus climate, and other aspects of undergraduate student life. These students are the student voice, as well as representatives of the body of students the HSI serves.
As a member of the HSI UAB, students are expected to collaborate with a diverse group of highly motivated student leaders and advocate to enhance the overall undergraduate student experience at a Hispanic Serving Institution
✽HSI Showcase
The HSI has also held events, such as our HSI Showcase, where we invite other HSIs to learn and share our progress as we approach our goal!
Currently, UC Davis has not yet reached HSI status at 24.1% Hispanic enrollment and is recognized as an Emerging HSI. With Chancellor Gary May serving as President for Latino Success and the doubled growth between 2011 and 2021 of students who identify as Chicanx/Latinx, UC Davis is committed to closing the equity gaps in higher education and enabling all of our community members to thrive and reach their full potential. The work to reach HSI status represents a legacy of advances to achieve the longstanding vision of “servingness” to the Chicanx/Latinx community that extends beyond the aspirations of the federal designation.
