Cheterrapesti – The Earth Beneath Your Feet
Soil protection is no longer simply a scientific challenge. It is increasingly a question of how knowledge, policies, economic priorities, and everyday decisions can be brought together.
This issue of CheTerraPesti explores these connections, beginning with new evidence on European soil degradation and the growing urgency of translating soil health indicators into effective governance. The debate extends to the economic valuation of soil, the proposal for a global soil convention, and the uncertainties that shape land-use decisions.
Urban soils deserve particular attention. Studies from Palermo and northern Germany show what happens when sealed soils are returned to ecological functioning, while research on carbon losses and nature-based solutions challenges conventional approaches to urban development.
Equally important is soil literacy: understanding soil is a prerequisite for protecting it. CURIOSOIL initiatives - as the survey that involve the whole UE citizens - and recent educational research remind us that awareness must reach beyond scientific communities.
Bringing these contributions together reveals their shared message: soil science, education, economics, and policy cannot advance independently if soil protection is to become effective.
