Last November, world leaders met in Glasgow for the COP26 climate summit. As wildfires and floods illustrated the reality of the climate catastrophe, we needed radical action on climate and a just transition to protect the poorest and most vulnerable who have done the least to cause the climate catastrophe but suffer the most. As the summit was in Scotland the British Government acted as hosts and Alok Sharma chaired. His chairmanship lasts until the next summit, COP27 November 2022 in Egypt.
At the summit, countries around the world came together and made pledges to tackle climate change. Chesterfield Climate Alliance joined voices with other climate activists calling for climate justice and for the UK government to end its support for fossil fuels at home and abroad.
But the results have been disappointing. There was no immediate stop to all support for coal, oil and gas. Huge subsidies are still being given to companies intent on opening up more oil and gas exploration.
We still have work to do before the next COP.
Chesterfield Climate Alliance set up Chesterfield & North Derbyshire COP26 Coalition - a coalition of individuals and organisations such as Transition Chesterfield, Extinction Rebellion, Climate Action North East Derbyshire, Stand up to Racism and Chesterfield Trades Union Council. The Alliance organised a number of activities and events in the lead up to COP26 designed to raise awareness about COP and encourage individuals and communities in Chesterfield and North Derbyshire to take action to address the climate and ecological crisis seriously as well as put pressure on local and national governments to do the same.
