The climb of chess in app stores all over the world comes after months of growing interest in chess. Creator IM Levy Rozman has reported gaining close to 400,000 subscribers to his channel in January. On Chess.com, active users have nearly doubled since December, hitting more than 11.4 million on February 2 alone.

Naturally, the new chess boom helped boost the game's performance on the iOS and Android app stores, dramatically increasing download numbers and usage. I have a rooted Kindle Fire that I use to get apps from the Google Play store. Your Chess.com app says it's not compatible with my device. I have downloaded and currently running the app (APK) from here -- from the Chess.com site when it was beta/ready for release). I think the reason why it says it's not compatible with my device is because you track the location and use that for serving ads to your customers. The functionality all works, so it's just an advertising-based restriction.

I was on my PC and checked Epics free games today and saw Chess Ultra was available, so I installed it. I did not know it was VR capable, but when I launched it I noticed Steam VR's status appear at the bottom and complain about my headset not being detected. So I went to my Quest, applied the latest system update (it has probably been a month or two since I last used it), opened up the AirLink connection to the Oculus app on my PC and brought up my desktop. From there, I opened the Epic game store and launched Chess Ultra. The virtual concentric ring world I was standing in goes away, a giant Chess Ultra logo would appear, but that would just go away and leave me standing in a pitch black void. No audio/music.

I used the menu button on the controller to bring the desktop view back and could see Chess Ultra running in Windowed mode, and I could interact with the game in 2D as if I were sitting at my desktop with a keyboard and mouse, but could not find a way to get the game to load into the quest or play it in VR. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. Is Steam VR interfering here? Edit to add: Just, for whatever it might be worth, I bought Alyx on Steam today and it playyyyyyyyed flawlessly. Love that game. Still, no chess...
