Director of Console Operations
Position Overview
The Director of Console Operations is a senior administrative position within the Chernair organizational hierarchy responsible for representing the interests of Xbox and PlayStation flight simmers throughout the organization.
The Director ensures that console pilots are not overlooked when Chernair develops new programs, policies, events, routes, aircraft requirements, or operational standards.
This position serves as the voice of Chernair's console community, while also establishing and maintaining standards specifically designed for pilots operating on console platforms.
Core Mission
The primary mission of the Director of Console Operations is:
Ensure console pilots have an equal voice, equal opportunity, and a quality experience within Chernair.
Chernair is committed to being a community that welcomes pilots regardless of their chosen platform. The Director of Console Operations helps make that commitment a reality.
Primary Responsibilities
Console Pilot Representation
Represent the interests of Xbox and PlayStation pilots within Chernair leadership.
Ensure console pilots are considered when new policies, programs, events, and initiatives are developed.
Identify situations where a decision may unintentionally exclude or disadvantage console pilots.
Bring console-pilot concerns, suggestions, and feedback to senior leadership.
Maintain an understanding of the challenges and limitations faced by console flight simmers.
Advocate for solutions that allow console pilots to participate whenever reasonably possible.
Console Operations & Standards
Develop and maintain operational standards specifically applicable to console pilots.
Establish clear expectations for Xbox and PlayStation pilots participating in Chernair.
Create guidance to help console pilots understand Chernair's operational procedures.
Work with leadership to ensure console-specific standards remain fair, practical, and achievable.
Review existing requirements and identify standards that may unnecessarily restrict console pilots.
Ensure console pilots understand how their platform may affect certain Chernair operations.
Community Development
Help build a strong and active console pilot community within Chernair.
Encourage Xbox and PlayStation pilots to participate in Discord discussions, events, group flights, tours, and other activities.
Identify opportunities specifically designed to engage console pilots.
Help connect console pilots with PC pilots and the wider Chernair community.
Encourage new console pilots to become active members of the organization.
Platform Awareness
Stay informed about the capabilities and limitations of console flight simulation.
Maintain awareness of differences between Xbox, PlayStation, and PC flight simulation.
Identify aircraft, scenery, software, add-ons, or other requirements that may not be available to console pilots.
Communicate platform limitations to leadership when they may affect Chernair operations.
Help Chernair make informed decisions when platform compatibility is a consideration.
Leadership Responsibilities
The Director of Console Operations is a senior administrative leadership position and is expected to actively participate in organizational decision-making.
The Director should not simply wait for console pilots to report problems. They should proactively identify potential issues and bring solutions to leadership.
The Director is expected to:
Serve as the primary advocate for Chernair's console pilots.
Participate in leadership discussions involving policies that may affect console pilots.
Proactively identify console accessibility concerns.
Develop solutions rather than simply identifying problems.
Work collaboratively with other directors and departments.
Provide guidance to staff regarding console compatibility and standards.
Represent Chernair's console community professionally.
Help ensure that platform differences do not unnecessarily divide the Chernair community.
Console Pilot Standards
One of the most important responsibilities of this position is developing fair and reasonable standards for console pilots.
These standards may include:
Flight and logging procedures.
Required operational practices.
Console-specific limitations and workarounds.
Event participation requirements.
Aircraft and route considerations.
Communication expectations.
Procedures for situations where console functionality differs from PC functionality.
Standards should never be created simply to make console pilots operate exactly like PC pilots. Instead, the goal is to establish equivalent expectations that account for the capabilities of the platform.
Working With Other Departments
The Director of Console Operations should work closely with all areas of Chernair.
For example:
Community Engagement can help identify console-pilot participation and community concerns.
Events staff can ensure group flights and events are accessible to console pilots.
Operations staff can coordinate console-compatible routes and requirements.
Leadership can consult the Director before implementing policies that may affect console pilots.
The Director should maintain strong communication across departments to ensure console considerations are integrated into Chernair's overall decision-making process.
What We're Looking For
The ideal candidate should be:
An active Xbox or PlayStation flight simmer
Familiar with the challenges of console flight simulation
Passionate about creating an inclusive community
A strong communicator
Comfortable advocating for others
Fair and objective when developing standards
Proactive and willing to take initiative
Able to work with both console and PC pilots
Comfortable working in a senior leadership position
Willing to collaborate with other departments
Interested in improving the overall Chernair experience
Previous leadership experience is beneficial, but the ability to understand, represent, and advocate for the console community is the most important qualification.
What Success Looks Like
Success in this position means a console pilot can join Chernair and feel that their platform was never an afterthought.
A successful Director of Console Operations will help ensure:
Xbox and PlayStation pilots have a meaningful voice within Chernair.
Console pilots are considered when organizational decisions are made.
Console-specific standards are clear and reasonable.
Console pilots can participate in as many Chernair activities as reasonably possible.
Platform limitations are understood rather than penalized.
Console pilots feel equally valued within the community.
PC and console pilots are integrated into the same community.
Chernair continues to expand its accessibility across platforms.
The Bottom Line
The Director of Console Operations is the voice of Chernair's console pilots.
This position exists to ensure that Xbox and PlayStation flight simmers are not simply included in Chernair—they are represented.
The Director is responsible for advocating for console pilots, developing appropriate standards, identifying platform limitations, and ensuring that Chernair's future decisions consider the needs of the entire flight simulation community.
At Chernair, your platform shouldn't determine how much of the community you get to be a part of.
