Mai earned both her Bachelor's and Master’s degrees from Suez Canal University in Ismailia, Egypt. Later, she participated in a joint exchange program and spent a year conducting research in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at CWRU. She later completed her Ph.D. study in the Department of Chemistry at CWRU. Her current research focuses on the photothermal conversion properties of nanomaterials and their interdisciplinary applications.
Postdoctoral Scholar (will start in Feb. 2026)
Vidya is an expert in retinal biology and stem cell-based ocular therapies. She joined the von Lintig Lab at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in 2022. Her research focuses on carotenoid metabolism, oxidative stress in the retina, CRISPR-based gene activation, and the development of iPSC-derived retinal pigment epithelial models. She investigates Aster protein-mediated lipid transport and homeostasis to better understand mechanisms contributing to age-related macular degeneration. Vidya completed her PhD in Stem Cell Biology in 2021, where she developed cultivated oral mucosal epithelial and ex vivo limbal epithelial grafts for ocular surface reconstruction in collaboration with ophthalmic surgeons, for the treatment of bilateral limbal stem cell deficiency.
Research Assistant (2025 to present)
