Hi! I'm Gavin Jenkins. I have lived in the city of Rochester with my wife, Krista and our 2 cats since graduating from college in May 2015. I graduated with my Bachelor's Degree in Biology from Hartwick College and then spent 2 years working as a graduate researcher at the University of Rochester. While I love science, my true passion is teaching and learning, and empowering our youth to be agents of change in their lives and community. I was a part of the Get Real! Science program at the Warner School of Education and graduated from the University of Rochester with my Master's Degree in Teaching for Chemistry and Biology in August 2019.
During the 2017-2018 school year I volunteered in the chemistry department at East EPO with Mary Courtney. From 2018-2019 I student-taught in the fall at World of Inquiry and in the spring at East EPO. I intentionally applied to work at East because of the wonderful scholars and families that I met and the amazing team of teachers, counselors, administrators, and staff members here. While my first year of teaching in the 2019-2020 school year was unconventional in many ways, I could not have asked for a better year and better group of scholars, families, and fellow educators. My hope is to continue being focused on being tenacious, thinking purposefully, and advocating for self and others.
While I am a science teacher and hope that my scholars will see the beauty in science and the importance of science in our society, I believe one of my most important jobs is being an advocate alongside our youth - to empower them to use the tools and assets they have - their innovation, creativity, motivation, hopes, and dreams to change the world around them.
