Starter Guide
Checklist Before YOUR Ride
Ensure safety helmet is secure according to guidelines
Hi viz or reflective clothing
Carry water to keep hydrated
Carry energy gel or instant energy food like banana
Carry air pump, puncture repair kit, spare tube and basic bike repair kit / multi-set tool
Well charged rear red light and headlight
Have protective glasses
Perform M check on the bike
Winter checks
Wet weather can be slippery, so make sure you have a good all season tyre with enough thread in it. Also you can run a slightly lower psi from the recommended , which gives more traction on the road
Make sure your chain is clean, you can buy a chain cleaning tool or use a good old toothbrush to clean your chain. Make sure you use a wet lube for the chain and wipe of any excess
Ensure breaks work smoothly and do not rub against your wheel. You can use some chain lube on the break cables to lubricate it
Keep yourself warm
Head cover & neck - balaclava
A good base layer and a mid layer
Thermal padded long bottoms
Winter cycling gloves
Merino wool cycling jersey: these will keep you warm
A good pair of cycling socks or any warm socks
Check for weather and wind speed before your ride an make sure you plan ahead.
Font and back lights fully charged
Watch out for potholes, slippery, icy roads, leaves
Don’t ride on water or puddles, try and avoid it if you can. If you do go on a puddle or water, make sure the breaks work before you speed up
