Sunday, July 20, 2025 | PC gaming | Steam | Destiny 2 | Read time 3-4 minutes
In Brief
I missed out on Destiny 1 and the early days of Destiny 2, only joining the experience once the free-to-play version became available.
Forsaken stood out as the peak of Destiny 2 for me, with The Final Shape coming in as a close second, while Lightfall fell short.
After four years with Destiny 2, I feel satisfied with the story's conclusion and am now more curious about what Bungie creates next.
Back when Destiny 1 launched, it felt like a diamond in the rough, a game that stood out for all the right reasons. As a kid, I couldn’t afford to play it, but I remember watching others experience it and feeling that sense of awe. Then came Destiny 2, which launched with similar hype. Again, I didn’t have the means to play it. It always felt just out of reach.
Eventually, Bungie released a free-to-play version of Destiny 2. That was my chance. I jumped in, excited but a little confused. The game lacked clear direction for new players, and it felt overwhelming. But the gunplay... man, it was smooth. Still, it didn’t quite grab me yet, so I stepped away.
Around 2017 or 2018, I discovered Warframe, and it became my go-to sci-fi game. With the launch of Fortuna on the horizon, I was all in. It scratched that futuristic itch and offered something fresh. But Destiny was always at the back of my mind.
Getting into Destiny fully was tough. Buying into the game, especially with all the expansions and DLCs, felt like a huge investment. Over time though, Bungie started offering older expansions for free, which finally gave me a real chance to experience it. I started with the Forsaken pack, and to this day, I still think it had the strongest story and gameplay in the franchise. The Final Shape comes close, but Forsaken still holds the crown for me.
Fast forward to today, and I’ve now played Destiny 2 for around four years. I’ve experienced its highs (The Final Shape) and its lows (Lightfall), but overall, it’s been an incredible journey. Getting to experience the culmination of the story in The Final Shape was special, and I’m grateful I stuck around long enough to see it. patient gamer mindset
Do I want more D2 expansions? Honestly, not really. I feel like the story has been told. I’m more interested in seeing what comes next. Whether it’s Destiny 3 or something entirely new from Bungie in this genre. Marathon doesn’t really excite me.
Could Bungie have done more during these past few years? Definitely. But I also have to give them credit. For all its flaws, Destiny gave me some of the most memorable gaming moments I’ve had in a long time, especially when it came to the major campaign beats (again, not Lightfall).
Conclusion
My journey with Destiny has been delayed, complicated, and at times frustrating, but also unforgettable. I didn’t grow up with it like some players did, but I eventually found my place in its universe. And now that the story has wrapped, I’m walking away with a sense of closure. Not because the game was perfect, but because it gave me something that stuck.
Thank you for reading!
Sincerely, SirBeetWix.
