Though many college students report they write solely on the computer, in this computer-mediated class, ironically, I will ask and encourage you to do work with good old-fashioned paper and pen. My reasons are two-fold. First, studies have shown that students who compose on the computer spend less time brainstorming and planning - two essential components of critical thinking and learning - and that writing online actually takes longer than writing with pen and paper! Second, studies have shown that handwriting triggers different centers within the brain, stimulating critical thinking and deeper understanding by involving more of the brain in the learning and writing process. Thus, for many students, writing with pen and paper is an important part of learning.
The California Department of Education (CDE) provides links to free third-party readers and viewers to help its site visitors view certain site content. It is a great resource for all of us as we will have content from many different sources throughout the course.
As noted, planning is an essential component of successful academic projects. I strongly encourage you to do some planning activities using notecards and/or Post-It notes to shuffle around ideas, play with concepts and examples, and organize your ideas within your projects.
The Financial Aid Office (FAO) administers federal, state, and private organization money to assist students from various economic backgrounds to meet their educational expenses. The college aid helps students and families to cover tuition and fees, room and board, books, and other coursework supplies as well as transportation. FAO's goal is for students to concentrate on their academic goals and obtain a higher education through the various programs CC offers. All students are encouraged to apply for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), California Dream Act Application (CADAA) and Scholarships.
Differences are what makes our culture and our class unique and interesting. We all learn differently, and this class is designed with a variety of learners in mind. I've tried to ensure that all material is accessible in multiple visual and auditory formats. That said, you may need additional accommodation to be successful in this class. Please do not hesitate to contact me if a resource or website is not accessible. In addition, students may request services from Disabled Students Programs and Services (DSPS) through the Access Program.
