Boban and Molly (Malayalam:  ) are the characters of a political satiric Indian weekly comic series created by VT Thomas (known by the pen name Toms) and is one of the longest uninterruptedly running comic series of the world. It was first published in 1962 and has been in print ever since. Boban and Molly, twin brother and sister from the rural environs of central Travancore became popular in Kerala through the Malayala Manorama weekly, which published the strip for almost four decades.[1] After a controversial legal battle between Malayala Manorama and Thomas, Boban and Molly began to appear as a comic magazine called "Tom's Magazine".

Before retiring as assistant editor in June this year, Thomas - better known as Toms - sought the weekly's permission to publish Bobanum Moliyum in book form. Although the weekly was to launch its own comic series - carrying the cartoon - Thomas was given permission by Chief Editor K.M. Mathew to go ahead on two conditions: the cartoons would be published in book form - not in magazine format - and only strips published before 1983 would be used.

But Thomas started Toms Comics as a monthly in magazine format and distributed it through the Malayala Manorama network of agents. It proved an instant hit, the first issue selling more than three lakh copies. Said Malayala Manorama's Managing Editor, Mammen Mathew: "I've carried ads free of cost for Toms buthe stabbed us in the back."

For fans of the twins, the situation is confusing. Other cartoonists continue to draw Boban and Molly in the weekly. It also features in the newly released Manorama Comics; in Toms Comics; and last fortnight, Thomas' version appeared in a respected magazine, Kala Kaumudi.

On his part, Thomas has registered the title Bobanum Moliyum with the Registrar of Newspapers of India (RNI) as a magazine. He did this by buying the title from a Cannanore resident who had had it registered some years ago. But Malayala Manorama convinced the RNI that the title should stand cancelled since a publication under that name had not been brought out in the time specified.

Unfortunately, or perhaps luckily for him, that year, the floods caused big losses to the farms. That took Toms to a village office to collect compensation. He was loudly complaining to a friend about the magazine rejections when a man overheard him and gave him an address to try his luck again. It turned out to be the editor of Manorama weekly magazine, Varghese Kalathil. The editor liked what Toms sent and asked him to make it an ongoing series.

Created by VT Thomas for the weekly Malayala Manorama periodical (and later the magazine), the adventures of the twins were first published in 1962. Thomas, better known by his pen-name Toms, found a home for his characters in the fictional village of Kizhakkamthooku somewhere in central Kerala. The artist also belonged to that landscape, having being born in Kuttanad in Alappuzha district.

It is the largest readership cartoon magazine in Kerala. Boban And Moli was first published in Malayala Manorama weekly until 1990. Now Boban and moly is published by Sri Toms himself as his own publication.

Mahakshamadevatha was clearly inspired by Punch, the storied British humour and satire magazine. But over the next ten decades, cartooning became as much a part of Kerala as the tapioca that had arrived from Brazil. The state not only produced cartoonists who were star draws in Malayalam newspapers and magazines, but also sent out legends to national and international publications. One such dearly loved export, PKS Kutty, even worked in the Bengali Anandabazar Patrika.

Boban and Molly hail from the Kuruvelliterana family. Currently, both of them are settled in Kerala. Boban in and Molly in Alapuzha. In its peak of popularity, it is even said humorously that Toms had influenced the way the Malayali comes to read a magazine __ from back to front __ by way of habitually reading the Boban and Molly cartoon that had for long found a niche in the back pages of the Malayala Manorama Weekly. be457b7860
