Nonverbal Activities

  • Practice turn-taking and sharing with games, toys, cars, etc...

  • Roll a ball or car back and forth you can work on core words like 'go' and 'more'

  • Practice gross motor imitation. Say to child "Do this" and do a movement such as touching nose, raising arms up, waving, etc... and have child imitate.

  • Attempt verbal imitation. Start with simple CV combinations such as: ba, ma, da, etc... You can also try some animal sounds. Pair the sound with a picture of the animal if available.

  • Play hide and seek

  • Read to your child. Label what you see in the book, talk about the pictures, actions and emotions of the pictured items. Have your child point to items, say "show me the..." and have child point to requested picture. If they are unsure, point it out and label it for them.

  • Let your child participate in household routines and talk about what you are doing. (e.g. doing laundry, making dinner, putting away the dishes, making the bed, etc.)

  • Encourage your child to use their imagination while playing with cars, dolls, blocks, or any toy or household item. Model conversations or actions like feeding the dolls, using the blocks as a phone, etc...

  • Do a puzzle

  • Work on sorting and matching. Match pictures, objects, colors, letters, or numbers!
