Masks in Schools
The safety of our students, teachers, and families should not be taken lightly.
With that being said, I am a firm believer of In Person Learning, and I want to do whatever it takes to keep our kids in the school building.
Remote learning was a failure across the country and our students deserve better.
The mask mandate is highly dependent on the CDC and the State. Districts have limited control over mask mandates in a pandemic if the CDC is telling everyone that they need to wear them. Schools must abide by this regardless of political affiliation or feelings of safety.
I believe that Platte Canyon is a small enough school district to properly manage a Covid-19 situation (There are roughly 750 kids in the entire district between k-12).
So far, as seen and talked about in previous school board meetings this year, Platte Canyon SD 1 is managing Covid very well and there have been very few cases since the beginning of the year. If a student is positive for Covid-19, that student is immediately taken out of school and quarantined at home. The district is tracking students, teachers, and parents, and doing what is necessary to keep kids healthy, and still keep masks at a minimum.
I want to see kids in school and without mask as much as we can while still having parents feel that their child is being taken care of, physically and mentally, at school.
Proper Facilities for Student Learning
The Elementary school building is falling apart, and it costs a lot to keep it up to date.
As of right now the district is entertaining the idea of building a new elementary school building closer to the High School and Middle School buildings.
Another idea is to combine MS and HS in the main High School building, and move elementary school students into the current MS building.
Students need to feel comfortable in their classrooms, and have the resources necessary for learning to take place. Teachers also need to be confident in the learning environment that they are providing to students.
If elected I would continue to help the school board manage decisions that give our students the best opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive.
"Are you Pro Union"?
Yes.
I have been a member of DCTA since moving to Colorado and obtaining work in DPS in 2013.
As an educator myself i believe in added support from my professional peers.
There are many school districts and school buildings that do not support teachers when they need it the most. A strong union affiliation keeps school administrators, and school boards accountable.
Front Range is the Union that serves Platte Canyon SD1. I have ben told by union leaders at Front Range that Platte Canyon has little union participation among staff.
As a leader in the school district I would always recommend having union affiliation, but it is the choice of the employee, not the board member.
I would work with the Union, the other board members, and the Superintendent as best I can to meet teacher and student needs.
Critical Race Theory (CRT)
Critical Race Theory is a look at politics from a social justice lens. This topic has been very hot across the U.S. and has school districts racing to "meet the needs" of their students by assimilating this into curriculum.
The problem here is that CRT does not meet the needs of every population, and CRT is presented in a way that promotes racism among cultures instead of unity. White teachers and white students should not be made to feel bad about being white. (referenced in below video)
It is understandable to me that schools and school districts want a more diverse population of educators teaching children. It is important to see success in your own race, and be around people that you identify with. But every student, regardless of race or gender, needs to have a mixture of people around them, a "melting pot" if you will. With more socialization among races comes familiarity, comfortability, and unity.
We should not be promoting division, and most CRT initiatives are doing just that.
After speaking with many community members I have gotten an understanding that CRT is not relevant to our community needs.
CRT is NOT apart of my agenda.
