History and Location
LOCATION
Charlemagne is a French High school and Middle school in Thionville, a town in the department of Moselle, in the region Grand Est, close to the border of Luxembourg.
Moselle is a department of the Grand Est, previously called Lorraine, and situated in the North-East of France. Lorraine was separate, but now, it’s a part of Grand Est with the regions of Champagne-Ardenne and Alsace. Therefore, Grand Est is a great region composed of three regions, but even if it isn’t used by administrations, anymore some people use “Lorraine”’s term again. Moselle is adjacent with the departments of Meurthe-et-Moselle and Haut-Rhin.
For the culinary specialities, Lorraine is famous for plums, the region’s fruit. But not only, there is also the “pâté lorrain”, “quiche lorraine”, and Lorrain’s sausage called “fuseau lorrain”. The greater city of Moselle is Metz, pronounced like “Mess”, with 117 492 inhabitants. Located in the Est of the department, it takes forty minutes by car with A31 highway. Urbana is not the only twin city with Thionville.
If you go to Thionville, you can do a lot of shopping because there are huge shopping centers such as the SuperGreen, the Geric, the Capucins and the E. Leclerc ; then, there are also stores in the city center. During summer, the festival “Rive en fête” takes place on the riverside, as the fun fair which takes part in the same season. In the city center, you can go to see a play at the theater or a movie at the cinema, named “La Scala”.
CULTURE
Our Lycée is located near the city center of Thionville, a large city in Lorraine. Our establishment also welcomes Junior High School students.
So, there are two large buildings next to each other. Students can leave the school whenever they want: when they want to eat outside the canteen, go for a walk in the city center between school hours, or just go home. The Charlemagne Lycée has a boy's boarding school. The girls go to another Lycée in Thionville, not very far from ours. Boarding is absolutely not compulsory, but sometimes some students live far away, and it is more convenient for them. The school was founded in 1802.
Here you can see a little part of the park behind the Highschool and you can have a view on the location of our region

HISTORY
The first school in Thionville dates from 1694. The school was not developed yet, it was not a big building like now. First, Thionville was influenced by Germany around 1870, and was taken by Germany before the first world war and during second world war. Indeed, some marks of the German occupations can still be seen in the school. For example, we still have a “Chapelle”, where students go when they have free hours between classes. The school was named “CHARLEMAGNE” (the name of a famous French King in French history) by the city council in 1962.

Do you know how Thionville and Urbana became twin-cities? Elise Poillot is a teacher in the University of Luxembourg, who lives in Thionville. One day, she travels to the University of Illinois in Urbana and she noticed many similarities between Urbana and Thionville. She suggested a twinning between Thionville and Urbana.
On the 15th of November 2014, everybody in Thionville was very excited to attend the twinning celebration between Urbana and Thionville, the two sister-cities.
