The beginning of the year we spent time investigating what it meant to be "me". Writing and exploring the sides of us that we may not usually share with others. The students visited a local slam poetry open mic night in Oceanside, with several students participating! While they also worked with a poetry group called BlackXpression to explore their voices and empathy for each other.
In science students worked to understand the genetics of self and how much of who we physically are is dictated by our familial heritage.
We studied our class genetic traits, graphing and comparing that to our families and then with our entire school community.
We worked to understand that we should not judge each other by our physical characteristics.
Dr. Jacobson from California State University- San Marcos, came to visit and talk to us about a genetic disease that she studies: Alopecia Areata. Students learned about the physical and mental effects of the disease and what scientific advances were being made to help combat the disease.
The culmination of the project was to present our poetry at the Old California Coffee House. Students did an amazing job performing to a live audience of patrons and family and the who even was well received. Students also published a book of their poetry and recorded their work for posterity.
