In the autumn and spring of 2015/16 we started a lengthy project on how food impacts ourselves and our community. We learned about how sugars are added to practically all foods, that our own school lunches are unhealthy (even when they say they are). That many of our students live in a food desert, and that your access to healthy produce directly affect an entire family.
We started the project with a Thanksgiving feast. Students made and brought in food from home which we then shared.
Students interviewed each other to understand why the food they brought in had a connection with their family. We made food label table cloths from food items we had researched.
