A theme that threads through many of our projects is activism. With this class we set about introducing activism through reading I Am Malala, a remarkable story of a young girl who lives in Mingora, Pakistan, and fights for a girls right to attend school in their country.
It also happened that one of the founders of the Malala Fund charity came to speak at our local university, California State University, San Marcos. Many of our students attended the evening's event and several went to the podium to ask questions (some video is below).
We then took this idea and wrote about Malala. These writings were then published on Amazon.com.
From writing about Malala, to being a voice in our community with regards healthy eating, students learned that it is not okay to just understand that there are problems in the world, that we have to stand up and try and solve them.
Shiza Shahid night was an amazing experience and we were so proud of those that stood up and asked very thoughtful and unprepared questions. Shiza herself noted that their questions were the best of the night!
