✈️ By Air

• Trieste Airport (TRS) – Also known as Aeroporto del Friuli Venezia Giulia, located about 30 km from the city center.

  • From the airport, you can reach Trieste by train (30–40 min) or airport shuttle (recommended).

• Venice Marco Polo Airport (VCE) – A larger international hub, about 150 km from Trieste.

  • You can transfer by bus to Venezia Mestre train station and take a direct train to Trieste (2–2.5 hours).

• Ljubljana Airport (LJU) – In Slovenia, about 110 km away.

  • Shuttle services (e.g., GoOpti) provide direct transfers to Trieste.

🚆 By Train

• Trieste is served by Trenitalia, the Italian national rail service.

  • The main railway station, Trieste Centrale, is centrally located and within walking distance of many hotels.

  • There are direct trains from Venice, Milan, Rome, and other Italian major cities.

🚌 By Bus

• Long-distance buses (e.g., FlixBus) operate frequent services to Trieste from major Italian and Central European cities.

  • The Trieste bus station is centrally located, near the main railway station.

From Trieste to IFPU

The IFPU building is located within the International Center for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) campus in Grignano, approximately 7 km from Trieste city center.

From Trieste Centrale railway station, you can reach both the Adriatico Guesthouse and the institute via bus Line 6 (direction Grignano):

•     Get off at Grignano (last stop) for the Adriatico Guesthouse

•     Get off at Centro Studi (point C on the map below) for the ICTP campus and IFPU

Bus tickets can be purchased at newsstands or tobacco shops ("Tabacchi") and should be validated on board. It is not possible to buy the ticket from the driver. Alternatively, digital tickets can be purchased via the local transportation phone app TPL FVG.

The taxi fare from Trieste Centrale railway station to the ICTP campus is approximately €20. While taxis are generally available and convenient, travelers are advised to confirm the fare in advance or ensure the meter is running, as overcharging of tourists is not uncommon in Italy.
