The Kill Team Compendium is a book which released at the same time as Kill Team 2021. The Compendium includes basic rules for kill teams for every faction in Warhammer 40,000, and was intended as a stop-gap measure for players to use until new rules and teams could be released later. While the teams included in the Compendium are good for learning, most lack the rules depth for competitive play.

Since Kill Team builds on the existing 40K universe and its model ranges, there are already dozens of factions (you can see all 40k Factions here) for you to build kill teams for, but in this new edition, bespoke boxes of models built primarily for Kill Team are also being released, so there has never been a better time to get on board this great skirmish game.

The Kill Team Core Book does an excellent job of converting 40K lore to this smaller scale, with tons of examples of what missions each faction in the game would give their kill teams, and there are plenty of story snippets and quotes from kill team soldiers strewn across the pages of the book. Expansion books such as the one in the Octarius starter set gives you even more detail, telling the story of a specific warzone and what kill teams from different factions are up to there.

The Octarius box features an Ork Kommandos kill team and another one for the Death Korps of Krieg, as well as an awesome ork scrapyard killzone and all the accessories you need to play the game. Simply the best way to get into the game at this moment.

Your operative might also have special equipment with rules of their own that you have chosen when building your team, but apart from those, everything you need to know about an operative can be found on their datacard.

Where I thought the game struggled was its product strategy. While the core book was a great product, the updates were a mixed bag. Some rules were only released alongside miniatures. For example, there were named commanders with special rules. The models were standard miniatures for the factions, but the only way to get the rules for use in Kill Team was to buy them alongside the mini. Kill Zones also had that problem. The terrain boxes sold out quickly, but they were initially the only way to get the Tactic cards and special rules for those kill zones even if you already had the terrain in your collection. That was eventually remedied with the recent release of the Kill Zones book, but that book is now obsoleted by the new edition just half a year after it was announced.

You can use Tactical Ploys for short-term, on-the-fly bonuses but Strategic Ploys can make a huge difference and typically impact your whole Kill Team for the whole turning point. For instance, the Craftworld kill teams can make use of Fleet for 1CP which upgrades the speed of every model by giving them Dash for free if they move or fall back.

I finally got the 2022 Annual and created a new template based on that format. In addition, I fixed the font size issue identified above and improved the skull graphic. The file now includes both formats (Compendium and Annual) so you can choose the one that works for you. From what I can tell, the original (Compendium) format allows for different types of kill teams to be chosen for a faction whereas the new (Annual) format only includes a single kill team option.

While armies numbering millions clash on battlefields spread across a thousand worlds, specialised teams of elite operatives are dispatched on dangerous missions to accomplish vital objectives from the shadows. These kill teams, as they are known, are picked from the most capable and independent of their kind, using strange and esoteric skills to achieve what a mighty army could not.

The new edition of Warhammer 40,000: Kill Team has been redesigned from the ground up as the greatest tabletop skirmish experience yet, seeing teams of experienced operatives engage in vicious close-quarters combat as they race to complete their missions. In this book you'll find the complete rules for playing Kill Team as well as a host of missions to embark on, lore covering the grim darkness of the 41st Millennium, and insight on the factions vying for dominance among the shadows.[1]

As the most mechanically balanced style of play, matched play games are a chance for commanders to pit themselves against their opponents in battles of tactical skill and turn-by-turn decisions. With each kill team using only the core weapons and equipment on their datasheet, players will need to plan ahead to outsmart their foe and claim victory.

There are several booklets in this box. You get the 56-page strong Kill Team rule expansion, covering the rules of the ultra-close battlezones of the Truehawk and Ministorium Shrine (the two sides of the game board), the rules for the two kill teams incl. data cards, missions and a first snipped of the Commanders rule. The assembly instructions only cover the assembly of the miniatures and not for the terrain. be457b7860
