General information for future students and postdocs

Questions/Answers

1. When will the advertised PhD/postdoc positions start?

For any advertised PhD/postdoc position, I expect it to start as soon as possible, unless otherwise specified in the position description. Of course, if you are outside of Gothenburg or Sweden, I understand it will take some time for you to prepare for the academic move and to apply for the Swedish visa (work permit).

2. How about the salaries?

The current PhD salary is 32.5 kSEK per month before tax, and you will get about a 5k increase per month after obtaining the Licentiate degree which is usually conducted in the middle of the project. For postdoc positions,  it is around 42 kSEK/month with a small increase every year based on your performance.

3. How about the visa of your family members?

If they come to Sweden with you, they will also be eligible to apply for a visa, and the adults of them will have the same work permit as you do. Details can be found on Swedish Migration Agency website.

4. Can I get a waiver for providing English certificate(s)?

If you had an academic degree in English or study for a quite long time in English-speaking places, and demonstrate good English capability, then you do not have to provide English certificates.

Swedish work permit (visa included)

Please follow the guidelines provided by the Swedish Migration Agency to apply for your work permit.

Tax relief

Tax relief for foreign employees (Only applies if you are a senior researcher)

Housing

Housing in Gothenburg is the landlord's market. Chalmers is located in the city center, so basically, it is more expensive the closer you live to Chalmers, but the buses and trams are very convenient here.

To rent an apartment, one of the most efficient ways is to place a detailed ad on Blocket and let landlords contact you. The university has some housing resources on a  short-term contract basis and for these, please contact our division administrator Christine Johansson (christine.johansson@chalmers.se).
