This will be a more simplistic, games-based debate class. Combining confidence-building activities with collaborative debating, your children will learn how to properly form arguments, become more confident and will leave the program as skilled debaters. Through educational games and engaging instruction, this program teaches the skills that eventually will be helpful in debating and the necessary skills to be successful in class. We aim to help each and every child reach their potential and will focus on the needs of every child while helping to strengthen their confidence and their skills. By the fourth week, your kids will be debating on their own!
This class will take a stronger look at more formal debate styles, while still maintaining a fun environment. Here, your children will make three-argument speeches and will rebut their teammates. By doing this, they are sure to gain valuable skills for public speaking and will become more comfortable communicating their opinions. Additionally, this is sure to enhance your child’s writing skills. This is an amazing first step into a future career as a middle school or high school debater or to become more enthusiastic and successful students.

This year, we both want to help give younger students the same experience that we have both benefited so greatly from, and so we decided to start this online virtual debate program.
When I first started debating in grade six I was very shy and quiet, too afraid to even talk in the meeting, let alone speak in front of a class. However, throughout the past few years, debate has helped me grow and strengthen all of my skills, and I am now a confident public speaker and a debate enthusiast. After being in my school's debate team in middle school, I made it onto my school's team in grade nine where my team and I proceeded to win a tournament! This summer, I participated in debate camp and expand my knowledge of different types of debating. Ever since I was young, I have spent my spare time programming activities, even if they were only for my sister. I am an experienced tutor, a youth program leader and I love to babysit. I have been in several leadership positions, as well, including Student Council President in grade eight and class rep in grade nine. With my combined passion for debate, programming and education, I am confident that this program will leave students as positively impacted by debate as I have been.
My debating journey all began when I stepped into room 310 in grade six. I walked into that room as someone who wasn't comfortable with oral presentations, someone who stumbled on their words when speaking, and as someone who didn't even know what it meant to debate. Three years later, I walked out of that room as someone who jumps at any opportunity to present in front of the class, as someone with an astounding vocabulary, and most importantly, a confident debater! My experience with leadership positions extends past debating. This year I was the secretary on student council at my school, and one of my duties as secretary included morning announcements. After three years on the debate team, I had the confidence to passionately share these announcements for the entire school every morning. Additionally, I led assemblies for my school on a monthly basis. After this program, my goal is for the students to leave the Zoom call the same way I felt walking out of room 310, confident, intelligent, and with a smile on my face!
