Сонце гріє, вітер віє
З поля на долину,
Над водою гне з вербою
Червону калину,
На калині одиноке
Гніздечко гойдає.
А де ж дівся соловейко?
Не питай, не знає.
Встала весна, чорну землю
Сонну розбудила,
Уквітчала її рястом,
Барвінком укрила;
І на полі жайворонок,
Соловейко в гаї
Землю, убрану весною,
Вранці зустрічають…
Close by the house the cherries flower,
Above the orchard the beetles hum,
Still singing, the girls homeward come,
The tired plowmen’s steps grow slower,
And mothers with supper wait at home.…
When I am dead, then bury me
In my beloved Ukraine,
My tomb upon a grave mound high
Amid the spreading plain,
So that the fields, the boundless steppes,
The Dnieper’s plunging shore
My eyes could see, my ears could hear
The mighty river roar.
When from Ukraine the Dnieper bears
Into the deep blue sea
The blood of foes … then will I leave
These hills and fertile fields –
I’ll leave them all and fly away
To the abode of God,
And then I’ll pray…
Ich war grab über 13(dreizehn) Jahre.
Die Schafe grasten um mich her,
Ich weiß nicht, war’s der wunderbare.
Besonne Tag? Ich weß nicht mehr,
Mir war so wohl im heitren Winde,
Als ob der Himmel offen stünde…
Vom Dorf her riefen sie zum Essen,
Ich aber lag am Wiessenhang.
Und meine Kindesseele schwang.
Zum Himmel sich auf leisem Flügel.
Was hat mein Herz so süß erfüllt?
Wie grüßten Dorf mich und Gefild,
Wie selig Himmel, Wald und Hügel!
Sie mähte Weizen für den Herrn,
War müde; doch nicht auszuruhn.
Ging zu den Garben sie –zu nähren.
Den Sohn Iwan;
was sollt‘ sie tun?
Der lag und schrie in seinen Windeln.
Im Schatten bei den Garben dort.
Sie legt ihn trocken, gibt dem Kinde.
Die Brust und herzt es, und sofort.
Fällt, wie sie sitzt, der Schlaf gelinde.
Auf sie herab...
