The keynote:
The Intercultural Dimension in English Language Didactics
Educational initiatives that use holistic, participatory, research-based, and action oriented approaches and strategies are fundamental for newly emerging intercultural approaches in foreign language didactics. The role of education thus becomes critical in trying to present the dynamic, natural and unavoidable nature of social tensions and conflicts in any society, in which the dominant social orders, inequalities, injustices, and sometimes even massive (post-war) traumas, should be understood, analyzed and contextualized as a part of foreign language teaching and learning processes. Education of teachers for social justice, intercultural education and peace (re) building could then be offered as models of interdisciplinary and multicultural approaches in foreign language teacher education that are framed within critical and peace pedagogies. In this lecture the intercultural dimension in English language teaching will be discussed with particular focus on the European practices and with special attention given to the teacher education programs and classroom practices in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The lecture will also explore the possibilities and challenges for using a critical pedagogy and peace education framework as well as an intercultural approach to foreign language education in pre-service teacher training courses that emphasize reflection, critical thinking, empathy, multiperspectivity along with other aspects of intercultural communicative competences.
