 It is believed that the. name "Chalakudy" is derived from the word Shalakudy, meaning a place where sacrifices are largely made. According to the Hindu religious scholars and local legends, Many "rishis" (including Saptarshis) used to come r here as it was considered as a sacred land  and did settlement for conducting sacrifices and hoisted  flag next to it to identify the spot, this gave the name "yagashalakody". And evolved to Shalakudy , and layer to Chalakudy,  ,
