Biography
Dr Thomas Lampert is a Computer Science researcher in the general field of Artificial Intelligence, and more specifically in Machine Learning and Image and Time-Series Analysis in various fields of application (most recently in medical imaging and remote sensing).
He holds a PhD from the University of York, UK, which was carried out in collaboration with (and sponsored by) the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) and QinetiQ Ltd. He has held various research positions at the University of York and the University of Strasbourg. Throughout his career, he has worked in strong relation with industry through various collaborative projects and consultancy, and he has been involved with a number of international research groups.
He is particularly interested in the application of machine learning and AI to real-world problems, and overcoming the difficulties that this process poses. His research has been published in international journals in several theoretical and applied research areas. He is heavily involved in activities related to teaching, doctoral supervision and knowledge exchange between academia and industry.

25 Apr: Look forward to giving a talk on Reliability and Explainability of AI – An Example of Face Recognition at the Crim/AI conference in Strasbourg.
25 Apr: Looking forward to participating in the panel discussion on AI & Research using Health Data at the Health, Law, and Technology Symposium 2024 in Brussels, Belgium.
18 Apr: Looking forward to giving a talk on AI to the Rotary Club of Strasbourg.
2 Apr: I have been appointed as an expert on AI for the European Commission for the Efficiency of Justice (CEPEJ), Council of Europe.
1 Apr: Shabarinath Nair has started his PhD with myself and Inbal Backer-Reshef on generalising time-seres mapping algorithms.
12 Mar: The last steering group meeting took place with all the partners present.
8 Feb: I started a one month research visit to several universities/laboratories in Japan (University of Kyoto, University of Nagoya, and the National Institute of Informatics).
2023
15 Feb: Happy to give an invited featured talk on Generative AI at the 5th International Symposium on Academic Writing and Critical Thinking, Nagoya, Japan.
13 Feb: Was very happy to give an invited talk to Prof Mahito Sugiyama's team at the National Institute of Informatics, Japan.
21 Dec: The project HistoGraph, for which I am the principal investigator, was financed by the ANR (Agence nationale de la recherche). It will bring together ICube, IHU, and the École Polytechnique (Johannes Lutzeyer) to develop an advanced AI based diagnostic framework for histopathology.
27 Nov: Presented the design of the HELP course on AI that I am developing (with others) to the Institut de Droit Européen des Barreaux at the Council of Europe today.
24 Nov: Attended the Cyberjustice Europe 2023 conference co-organised by the IERDJ and the Council of Europe today.
18 Nov: Looking forward to being a mentor at the Council of Europe's Hackathon on the Digital Future of Justice in Paris, 17th to 19th November.
19 Oct: It was a pleasure to take part in a round table to discuss Artificial Intelligence during the MAIAGE's annual congress.
12 Oct: I gave a talk titled "Generative AI: Breaking Barriers and Borders" during the 20th anniversary symposium of the Nagoya University – Strasbourg University research collaboration.
2 Oct: Welcome To Laetitia Rebiere who has started her PhD with me titled 'Tumor Segmentation in Multimodal 3D Imagery using Self-Supervised Learning: A Case Study on the Liver' in collaboration with Dr. Aïna Venkatasamy (IHU Strasbourg) funded by ITI HealthTech.
29 Sept: Congratulations to Dr Mihailo Obrenović who successfully defended his thesis titled "Learning Domain Invariant Representations of Heterogeneous Image Data" under my co-supervision with Prof. Pierre Gançarski
22 Sept: Congratulations to Dr Hussein El Amouri who successfully defended his thesis titled "Learning Explainable Constrained Representations for Time-Series" under my co-supervision with Prof. Pierre Gançarski and Dr Clément Mallet
15 Sept: I will be visiting Prof. Yamamoto at Kyoto University in February 2024.
5 July: We (the SDC research Team) are organising an evening 'AI in Alsace' which will be co-hosted with the PFIA conference in Strasbourg (France's largest AI and Machine Learning conference), where we will bring together industrial partners using/interested in AI with representatives from the university (Michel de Mathelin - Vice President in charge of relations and valorisation with the socio-economic world) and from the region for a convivial evening.
5 Jun: Secured ITI HealthTech PhD funding for my project with Dr. Venkatasamy (IHU/Hôpitaux Universitaires de Strasbourg) and Dr. Mazellier (IHU) on developing new approaches to analyse Dynamic Full-Field Optical Coherence Tomography.
1 Jun: I presented my work (in collaboration with Mihailo Obrenović, Pierre Gançarski, and Miloš Ivanović) on "Learning Domain Invariant Representations of Heterogenous Remote Sensing Image Data" at the ICube-KAIST workshop
1 May: Welcome to Federico Zucchi who has started a PhD (CIFRE) with me and Cephalgo on EEG signal analysis
23 March: I gave a talk to the OBELIX team, IRISA Lab, Université Bretagne-Sud on "Semi-supervised learning in multi-modal images and time-series", I also visited the team to discuss future collaborations.
16 March: I have been visiting Thi-Bich-Hanh Dao and Christel Vrain at LIFO, University of Orleans to discuss my work on Constrained Clustering.
14 March: The first workshop bringing together the partners of the chair took place, tackling the subject of “Labelling and Exploiting Unlabelled Data".
29 Apr: I was appointed by the Council of Europe as an expert to create an online training course on Artificial Intelligence and Human Rights for the Council of Europe's Human Rights Education for Legal Professionals (HELP) programme
24 Jan: The third steering committee was held with all the partners present.
20 Jan: I presented the chair and my research to the visitors from Karlsruhe University of Applied Science and Offenburg University of Applied Science (Germany) on the occassion of the signing of the double Master's in AI agreement that has been put in place between the three institutes.
19 Jan: Presented the chair's research to the IHU steering committee to demonstrate the strong links that we have created.
17 Jan: Meetings with Heppner to discuss their Open Innovation strategy and how TPS and the Chair can be help them to achieve this.
2022
Nov-Dec: travelling to the US for the International Visitor Leadership Program, the U.S. Department of State's premier professional exchange program, visits include the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, Senate Artificial Intelligence Caucus, National Institute of Standards and Technology, MIT, IBM, Harvard, Electronic Frontier Foundation, and more).
18 Nov: The region GrandEst has awarded our project for additional support for the Chair, which will help us to further develop the connection between ICube and industry through the GAIA service platform.
16 Nov: I am looking for an intern to work on time-series respresentation learning for remote sensing the advert is here, this internship will be done in collaboration with CNES and will potentially be followed by a PhD thesis (also in collaboration with CNES) for the right candidate and subject to funding (in progress).
30 Oct: It was a pleasure to participate in the kickoff meeting for the Council of Europe's Transparency of Judicial Decisions and Enhancing the National Implementation of the ECHR project.
21 Oct: I will give a talk on AI and the Environment at the symposium “Sustainable development: a challenge for the university”, organised to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Kyoto University and University of Strasbourg exchanges.
13 Oct: Lazar Krstić from the University of Kragujevac has been awareded a scholarship to visit my research team later in the year.
13 Oct: Met with Christophe Schmitt, Michel de Mathelin, et Alice Couégnas to discuss Heppner's vision and the continuation of the chaire.

28 Sept: Cephalgo and I are looking for a PhD candidate to join a CIFRE PhD opening between the company and myself, see the job listing here.
15 Sept: I have been invited to attend the European Parliament's STOA Panel meeting on "Governing data and AI for all: Models for sustainable and just data governance".
14 Sept: I am looking for an engineer to join the AIonWetlands project, the job will involve applying deep learning and domain adaptation to remote sensing images (amongst other more remote sensing aspects) with aim to preserve Mediterranean wetlands (description here).
30 Sept: I have been invited to attend the TJENI (Transparency of Judicial Decisions and Enhancing the National Implementation of the European Court of Human Rights) project kickoff meeting at the Council of Europe.
21 Sept: Filming with Grand E-Nov+ to promote ICube and the Chair's activities in knoweldge exchange and support and services for local industry in AI and Data Science.
8 Sept: Met with the managing director of Electricité de Strasbourg, Christelle Joseph-Monory, to update her on the chair's activities.
2 Sept: Met with Socomec to discuss next year's engineer project.
8 Jul: Dragutin Ostojić from the University of Kragujevac has been awareded a scholarship to visit my research team later in the year.
8 Jul: Presented the SDC research group's work at the 9th Scientific Days of the Federation of Translational Medicine of Strasbourg (FMTS).
4 Jul: I was awarded an Habilitation à diriger des recherches for my manuscript titled "Sustainability in Artificial Intelligence: Recycling Data and Reducing Model Waste". Thank you to all the members of the Jury!
27 Jun: Gave a talk on 'Deep Learning' as part of Socomec's R&D Seminar.
25 Jun: Attended Socomec's 100 year celebrations.
22 Jun: First session of the Adavanced Machine Learning continued education course for the KTUR project.
20 May: Secured ITI HealthTech PhD funding for my project with Prof. Liverneaux (Hôpitaux Universitaires de Strasbourg/ICube) and Prof. Padoy (ICube) on AI Based hand surgery analysis.
12 Apr: I participated in two sessions of the KTUR innovation day: 1. as part of the round table concerning the "Impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on small and medium-sized industrial companies", and 2. to promote the machine learning course on offer (see news 20 Nov 2021).
8 Apr: I presented my research to the IHU/ICube workshop to promote collaboration between the laboratories.
16 Feb: Our project EO4MedWetland, in collaboration with Pierre Gançarski - ICube, Anis Guelmani - Tour du Valat, and Dorian Ginane - Geomatys, has been funded by the Space Climate Observatory (SCO), CNES.
26 Jan: Visiting researcher Prof. Daniel O'Leary will give two seminars on Text Mining (3rd February) and Business Intelligence (7th February) to our students, ICube researchers, and the Alsace Tech network.
7 Jan: The article "ICube L'IA, autrement" has been published in December 2021's edition of Or Norme in which I was interviewed alongside Michel de Mathelin, Cédric Wemmert, and Michal Parusinski.
27 Jan: The Chair's steering committee will be held with representatives of all the industrial partners.
2021
9 Dec: The Hager PI team presented their work at Hager's TechExchange, held at the Hager Forum.
6 Dec: Met with Marc Platini, AI Scientific Coordinator at Grand E-Nov+, the innovation and international business development agency of Grand Est, to discuss the collaboration between indrustry and academia in AI.
20 Nov: My new deep learning course offered to companies as part of the cross border KTUR initiative is now live and ready for subscriptions, Prof. Manfred Strohrmann from the Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences will give the first part of the course.
17 Nov: Happy to have faciliated Lesya Dymyd from 2CRSI to moderate the conference on "How international cooperation against cybercrime protect your company" organised by the US State Department at the Mulhouse Tradeshow on Industries of the Future.
9 Nov: A call with 2CRSI to define their internship and engineering project for our students next year
7 Nov: The end to a very sucessfull Hackathon @ TPS on AI and Data Science, well done to team 'Passage' who won the TPS AI Prize (and thanks to Prof. Cédric Wemmert for the subject)! 4 May: I will give a talk at the GdR ISIS meeting Apprentissage automatique multimodal et fusion d'informations on my research titled Domain Invariant Representation Learning with Multi-Modal Images, this will take place on 27th May
15 Apr: I have been invited to give a talk on AI in May to Russian civil servants in a session dedicated to the implementation of common European standards, co-organised by the Council of Europe and the Moscow State Institute of International Relations under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation.
15 Apr: I will be on the Programme Committee of the 2021 Upper-Rhine Artificial Intelligence Symposium.
7 Apr: I have been selected to take part in the International Visitor Leadership Program, the U.S. Department of State's premier professional exchange program.
1 Apr: A research project with IMKI has been agreed, I'll be working with them and an engineer who will join the SDC team.

11th Dec.: Meeting with Député du Bas-Rhin M Thierry Michels and M Christophe Collet to discuss the interaction between the industrial and academic worlds.
16th Nov.: The Heppner engineering project team have been invited to present their successful work to the company's executive committee.
6th Nov.: I have been invited by the Rectorat de l'Académie de Strasbourg and la Nef des sciences to participate in a discussion on AI with secondary teachers in the Grand Est region.
2nd Nov.: Meeting with 2CRSI on their future engineering project and involvement in teaching at TPS.
29th Oct.: The press agency of the European Parliment (EbS) will come to ICube to see our work on AI and to interview the chair.

15th Sept.: In collaboration with ES, I will participate in a round table on "Le plan IA en action : Les formations et la recherche en IA au service des entreprises" at 360 Grand Est on 29th September 2020 [this has now been moved to December and will be a digital event].
1st Sept.: A hackathon on AI and Data Science will be held in the TPS in partnership with AlsaceDigitale in 2021.
1st Sept.: We welcome Mihailo Obrenović as the engineer hired to support the chair in research and engineering projects.
July: I will give lectures on generative models, GANs, and variational autoencoders for the Applied AI course next semester.
July: A new Applied Machine Learning course in TPS will start in January 2021. The course will focus on tackling real-world challenges through 20 hours of practical work (plus homework), in which the students will work in teams of 4 or 5. As in an industrial setting, the teams will propose their solution and present their findings in a report and presentation at the end of the challenge.
July: An engineer, who will assist the Chair in research and teaching, has been found and will start in September 2020.
