The CGIAR 2025-2030 Portfolio is designed to address the most pressing global challenges related to food, land, and water systems. This Portfolio is structured around eight Science Programs, one Scaling Program, three Accelerators, Assets: genebanks, and Knowledge, all working cohesively to leverage CGIAR’s extensive capabilities and partnerships.
The Science Programs focus on critical areas such as Breeding for Tomorrow, Sustainable Farming, Sustainable Animal and Aquatic Foods, Multifunctional Landscapes, Better Nutrition, Climate Action, Policy Innovation, and Food Frontiers and Security. The Scaling Program, Scaling for Impact, aims to amplify the reach and effectiveness of research innovations. The three Accelerators – Gender Equality and Inclusion, Shared Capacity, and Digital Transformation – provide strategic support across all Programs, ensuring that cutting-edge methods and findings are integrated throughout the Portfolio.
A cross-CGIAR Steering Group is currently overseeing a study of the long-term strategic Assets and Knowledge that underpin CGIAR’s science and innovations (long-term field trials, breeding services and operations, long-term data maintenance, and modeling capabilities). This study aims to help understand the full range of these Assets and Knowledge and set out options for their improved management as well as sufficient, predictable, and sustainable financing.
This new Portfolio builds on the successes and lessons learned from previous cycles and incorporates feedback from a wide range of stakeholders, including the Independent Science for Development Council (ISDC), the System Board, and the System Council.
The design process has been marked by a series of Listening Sessions, held in 25 priority countries, to ensure that CGIAR’s research and innovation are firmly grounded in the needs and priorities of its partners at all levels.
The overarching goal of the 2025-2030 Portfolio is to elevate CGIAR’s contribution to addressing global challenges such as climate change, gender and social inequalities, poor-quality diets, rural poverty, environmental degradation, and fragility, conflicts, and violence. By doing so, it aims to catalyze transformative changes in food, land, and water systems, ensuring sustainability, equity, and resilience in the face of evolving global dynamics.
