Cottage Grove High School Wrestling
Cottage Grove High School Wrestling
The Cottage Grove High School Wrestling team endeavors to create an environment where student athletes learn to compete with integrity, work with focused determination, and create consistent life-long good habits.
Another solid week for the CGHS Lions as we continue to build momentum heading into the heart of the season.
On Wednesday, both teams competed at the historic MacArthur Court, squaring off against Sheldon, Willamette, and Marshfield. Wrestling in such an iconic venue was special in itself, and the atmosphere didn’t disappoint. We were fortunate to have several CGHS & U of O alumni in attendance, and it meant a lot to see Superintendent Todd Miller in the crowd supporting the Lions.
The Lady Lions had a great night, bringing home three hard-fought wins, including an exciting victory over Marshfield that came down to tie-breaker criteria. On the boys’ side, the Lions wrestled well and finished 2nd overall, coming up just short against a strong Marshfield squad. Later in the week, the boys traveled to Sutherlin for a tough dual and came away with another important win. With the victories at Mac Court and Sutherlin, the boys varsity dual team improved to an impressive 12–4 on the season.
Looking ahead, we’re excited to host over 40 teams this weekend for the Cottage Grove Invite. This tournament has truly roared back to life and now features serious statewide competition. Not long ago, the CGI had just a dozen teams in attendance.. this growth is a testament to the CG wrestling community and the countless hours put in by families and volunteers. We’re incredibly proud of everyone who has helped elevate this event into a true state-level tournament!!
Apologies for the delayed update—this past weekend also included the OWA Kids State Tournament in Redmond, which was an all-hands-on-deck effort to get our 37 Mat Club participants ready for action. Huge shoutout to the CG Mat Club for an outstanding showing, and special thanks to Jake and Michelle Stanley for their leadership, commitment, and continued support of youth wrestling in our community.
Big weekend ahead.. let’s pack the gym and support the Lions!

Whew — what a busy and productive week for Cottage Grove Wrestling. Overall, we’re in a really good place for this point in the season.
Senior Night was a big success, highlighted by a great crowd on hand to celebrate our senior class. The boys avenged last year’s loss to Newport and came up just short against a tough Philomath squad. With an away dual meet win over North Bend later in the week, the boys’ dual record now stands at an impressive 9–3 on the season.
At North Bend, freshman Russell Wood played the role of dark horse, sealing the team win for the Lions with an exciting 1–0 decision. We’re very excited to have North Bend back at our place next year as we restart what we hope becomes a traditional annual dual.
Following the dual meet, the CG Lady Lions put together an outstanding performance at Tualatin High School. It was great to see Alexsis and Taylor fight through early-season adversity and come away as tournament champions. Boston Kent and Aliyah Urenda each earned 3rd place, while Jaylee Tripp finished 4th. The girls finished 2nd out of 16 teams, representing Cottage Grove extremely well and getting some excellent preparation for upcoming Girls Regionals.
The boys faced a tough field and some very high-level competition. Jeffrey Conklin captured his 6th consecutive tournament championship and remains undefeated this season. Despite a wild semifinal that went to the final tiebreaker, Jeffrey dominated the tournament with two pins and a tech fall.
Unseeded freshman Mikey Hoye had a breakout performance, tech-falling the second seed and battling his way to the finals. While he ultimately came up short, it was great to see him find success against tough competition.
As a team, the Lions wrestled hard through the early rounds and were in the mix for a top-five finish before settling into a solid 10th place, with the top five teams all coming from 6A schools.
Looking ahead, next week features a special four-way dual at historic MacArthur Court on the University of Oregon campus, facing Marshfield, Willamette, and Sheldon. There’s a lot of wrestling history in Mac Court, and we’re expecting some fireworks. On Thursday, both teams head to Sutherlin to take on the always-tough Bulldogs. The boys will then get some well-earned rest as they prepare for the Cottage Grove Invite, while the girls compete at Harrisburg on Saturday.
Practice Schedule This Week:
Monday: COED Practice, 4:30-6:30 PM

It was a good week for CG Wrestling — and there’s plenty more to come.
CGHS Wrestling Recap – Siuslaw Tournament
Both the CGHS boys and girls wrestling teams competed at Siuslaw High School this past weekend and saw strong individual success across the board.
The girls team was on pace for a potential team championship, but injuries and grades prevented several key wrestlers from competing. Even so, the Lady Lions battled all weekend and finished 3rd as a team in a tight race. For much of the tournament, CGHS led the field before North Eugene and Dayton edged ahead in the final rounds.
Final team scores: North Eugene – 107, Dayton – 103, CGHS – 100.
We’re incredibly proud of how the girls competed and are excited to get team captain Boston Kent back in the lineup this coming week.
Girls highlights:
Alexsis Woody (130 lbs) – 2nd place after reaching the finals against a tough Pleasant Hill opponent
Aliyah Urenda (110 lbs) – 3rd place
Taylor Blank (125 lbs) – 5th place
Baylee Robinson (120 lbs) – 5th place
Emma Adair (125 lbs) – 6th place
On the boys side, the varsity team was missing four starters and still managed a respectable 4th-place finish as a team. Despite the gaps in the lineup, there were several standout performances.
Varsity boys highlights:
Jeffrey Conklin (132 lbs) continued his undefeated season, pinning his way through the tournament and bringing home another championship medal. He’s on fire right now, and it’s exciting to see his offseason work paying off.
Jayden Davis (150 lbs) wrestled a fantastic tournament and battled through a nail-biting final, falling by the narrowest of margins. His heart and competitiveness continue to impress.
Mikey Howe finished 3rd, narrowly missing an upset of the #1 seed in his opening match before dominating the rest of the field.
Mason Barnett (190 lbs) – 5th place
Jake Palluck (165 lbs) – 6th place
Ben Stewart – 6th place
Special shout-out to Jake Palluck, who stepped up for the team by wrestling two weight classes up. That kind of team-first mentality matters. Looking ahead, Jayden Davis and Jake Palluck at 150 lbs heading into regionals are shaping up to be lightning and thunder.
The JV boys finished 11th as a team, with some excellent individual performances:
Finnegan Kent (120 lbs) – Tournament Champion (his first bracketed tournament win)
Easton Horner (106 lbs) – 2nd place
Logan Hall (113 lbs) – 3rd place
Braxton Nowak (190 lbs) – 3rd place
Very impressed with these wrestlers—it was a privilege to watch them compete.

Great momentum heading into a big stretch of the season. Let’s keep building.
Girls Wrestling – Lady Dragon Invite
Our girls competed this weekend at the Lady Dragon Invite, one of the toughest tournaments of the season. With 52 teams and 611 wrestlers, the semifinals were nearly all state placer vs. state placer. It was an extremely high-level field and our girls really got a feel for state level wrestling. This was a grind of a tournament, and our girls showed up.
Alexis Woody (130) went 5–1, winning her consolation bracket
Aliyah Urenda (115) finished 2–2
Taylor Blank (130) went 3–2
Boys Wrestling – Special District Dual Meet Championship
The boys battled through a demanding five-dual day at the Special District Dual Meet Championship. Our varsity boys now sit at a 7–2 dual record on the season, clearly the Winter season CGHS team leader and are firmly on the hunt for a 3rd-place district finish in by-far the toughest league in the state. I’m incredibly proud of the entire varsity group and especially those who stepped up to secure key wins this weekend.
Tough losses to Sweet Home and Cascade, with several big individual wins in both duals
Dominant wins over North Marion, Stayton, and Junction City
Highlight of the day: an 84–0 shutout of Stayton, a result we haven’t seen in recent memory
This coming weekend, we take both boys and girls to Florence High School for the annual Nick Lutz Invitational. With 30+ teams in attendance this will be another competitive event where we're not just looking for a 3rd place finish. We’re entering 28 athletes, and looking to win it. Practice attendance is critical to our success, and at this point in the season, I believe we’re where we need to be—if we stay present and focused.
Because of that, this week will be an important recovery and preparation week for the rest of January.
The tone in the room this week will be geared more toward sharpening what’s already there with intent and precision, rather than grinding ourselves down. Recovery doesn't mean unfocused. We still need purpose, attention, and buy-in during this phase. So, show up and be prepared.
We are currently struggling, as a team, to consistently provide food and sustenance during weekend tournaments. I understand many families are new to the high school environment, but it’s important we get on board with Jen Conklin’s volunteer plan. Either bring items or contribute funds so staff can purchase food. There is a recipe to team success at tournaments and parent involvement is a huge part of that. Tournaments are expensive in both time and money, and removing food-related stress is one variable we can control if we want to compete at a high level.
Along the same lines, please make sure athletes are sitting with the team for the duration of competition.
Great teams - Support each other. Win together. Lose together
There’s nothing better than seeing 40 teammates on their feet cheering for a wrestler in a tight match. And it’s equally noticeable when someone is sitting alone, on their phone, away from the team. I wear CG colors with pride, and I want our athletes to experience the belonging that comes with being part of a successful team. That’s hard to experience when athletes are sitting with family in the spectator section or behind the team during a dual.
Enough said.

It was a busy and successful weekend across all levels of Cottage Grove wrestling:
The CG Wrestling Club hosted Grapple in the Grove with 600+ youth athletes in attendance.
Lincoln Middle School hosted the annual Rumble in the Jungle dual meet tournament with eight local middle schools.
Both CGHS varsity teams posted their best combined tournament results yet at Phil Smith.
As we enter January, practices are transitioning from strict fundamentals into match application and strategy. Conditioning is established, techniques are clicking, and our focus is shifting toward competition execution. This is a critical phase of athletic development as championship season approaches.
Nutrition and recovery are increasingly important. GET GOOD REST, EAT GOOD FOOD , HYDRATE.
This week features significant competition for both programs - both are same-day travel events. Athletes should bring lunch money or packed food.

Week 6/7: December 21st - Jan 5th
We hope everyone had a great holiday break. As we returned to practice this week, energy was good, but attendance was lighter than we’d like. This is where we truly appreciate parent support in helping athletes get back into the practice room next week.
January is when wrestling really starts to come together. Conditioning is established, techniques begin to click, and our focus shifts toward competition strategy. With that transition, proper fueling and rest become increasingly important. Coach Kent will be introduced updated nutrition guidelines at Monday’s practice, so I hope your athlete learned something. If nothing else, cut down on the sugar!!
Both the boys’ and girls’ teams have set strong goals for this weekend’s Junction City tournament. To give ourselves the best opportunity to succeed, we need all eligible athletes consistent, healthy, and prepared. Winter break is a key development window, this is when novice wrestlers begin moving toward JV, JV athletes push toward varsity, and those pursuing state placement often make their biggest jump.
We understand family commitments come up, and we appreciate the balance families manage. Consistency during this stretch, however, plays a major role in athlete growth and team success. Thank you for your continued support and accountability.

Week 5: December 15th - December 21st
What a week to be a CGHS Lion.
The Boys Varsity team delivered two statement dual wins, taking down the Siuslaw Vikings 41–35 on Wednesday night and edging Creswell in a nail-biter 38–37 to continue our undefeated season record of 4-0. These were team wins in every sense—grit, conditioning, and belief in each other from first whistle to last. Huge shoutout to the best wrestling staff in Oregon Wrestling - Nate Ferrell, Jeff Conklin, Andy Daves, and Chance Marsteiner!!
We also showed up in force at the North Bend Coast Classic, and the results reflected the work being put in by our athletes, families, and coaching staff. The Girls team led the program with a Top 10 team finish, the Boys JV placed 11th, and the Boys Varsity crowned our first tournament champion in recent memory. That’s momentum, and it’s contagious!!
🏆 Jeffrey Conklin – 138 lbs., Champion
Boston Kent – 4th place, 135 lbs.
Alexis Woody – 5th place, 130 lbs.
Easton Horner – 4th place, JV 106 lbs.
Finnegan Kent – 5th place, JV 120 lbs.
Mario Lengele – 6th place, JV 126 lbs.
Caleb Bruner – 6th place, JV 215 lbs.
Every point scored, every match wrestled, and every hand raised matters—and it’s a reflection of the culture we’re building together.
This week is a key prep week as we head toward the Grants Pass Winter Classic. The snow globe trophies are on the line for individual champions, and the field is stacked, with multiple tough teams coming up from California. It’s going to be a battle and we’re ready for it.
Both the boys and girls teams will travel with all athletes, which means representing CGHS the right way at school, at home, and on the road. Boys wrestle-offs will take place Wednesday, with some flexibility to ensure our younger wrestlers are placed in the best competitive situations.
I couldn’t be more proud of this group. One month into the season, our athletes are wrestling hard, supporting each other, and growing daily. As we head into winter break, consistency matters: be at practice, fuel your body, get your rest, handle your academics, and stay locked in. Progress doesn’t pause for the holidays.
Thank you to our parents, fans, staff, and community—your support shows up in the stands and on the mat every week. Let’s keep building.
Reminder: Unexcused absences from practice or school will result in ineligibility for competition for the entire week.

Week 4: December 8th- December 14th
Great work last week. The intramural Blue vs. Gold dual was a highlight and drew the largest crowd we have seen in years. Our high school teams had a quick turnaround and opened the season strong against Pleasant Hill and North Eugene's squad's. The Boys team starts the year 2–0 in duals, and both teams showed encouraging early progress.
The Boys team traveled to Bend for the Adrian Irwin Tournament, while the Girls team competed in Salem at the Battle for the Belt. We had several impressive performances and one tournament champion. Congratulations to Jeffrey Conklin for pinning his way to his first tournament title of the season. Jayden Davis was on pace for a championship before getting caught in the second round with a 14–2 lead. Braxton Nowak, wrestling up at 215, placed fourth, and Ramon Munoz-Gonzales finished sixth.
Our JV athletes also competed well, with Finnegan Kent and Ben Miller winning their brackets and several others finishing in the top three.
At the Battle for the Belt in Salem, the Girls team earned several medals in a tough field. Boston Kent placed second, Emma Adair took fourth, and Taylor Blank finished fifth, helping the Lady Lions place 14th overall. On the JV side, Bailey Jones and Jaylee Tripp both took second, Bella Valencia fourth, Summer Bell fifth, and Olivia Basting sixth.
We should be very proud of all CGHS wrestlers. This week we look ahead to the North Bend Coast Classic following our four-way dual in Florence at Siuslaw High School. All eligible wrestlers will travel for Wednesday’s dual, though we cannot guarantee time for all JV exhibition matches. The Coast Classic allows only two entrants per weight class (one varsity and one JV) for both Boys and Girls teams. Challenge matches on Monday will determine varsity lineups for both the Siuslaw dual and the Coast Classic. Athletes not competing will not travel with the team.
Reminder: Unexcused absences from practice or school will result in ineligibility for competition that full WEEK.

The '25-26 wrestling season is finally here and we're excited to get started! Here is some information about registration, practice, what gear your athlete needs, as well as Meet The Lions.
As we transition into separate Boys and Girls programs, both teams will use this website for reference and weekly updates. You can expect the website to be updated at least every Sunday. The updates include practice scheduling, competitions, and travel itinerary's for the week and beyond. Routine communications should be handled primarily through the Band app, email 2nd, and text/phone call last. Parents will have a separate band thread for any questions or chats, parents, please don't post or chat from the Athlete's Band app.
Registration:
Before an athlete can practice they need to be registered on FamilyID (scroll down for a comprehensive set of instructions) and have an up to date physical on file in the office. Please do not bring your physical to the coaches, they need to be turned in to the athletic secretary Lena Twyman in the main office. Once you have turned it into her, please bring a signed note to practice saying you are cleared to participate.
Grades:
Athletes need to be passing at least 5 classes and have a GPA of 2.0 or higher. If they do not meet those requirements, they are required to attend Wednesday school. This goes for athletes that are eligible but may have an F. Wednesday school will continue each week until the grades are brought up.
Practices:
Here are the practices for this upcoming week:
Monday: 3:30-5:30 pm Boys - 5:00-7:00 pm Girls
Tuesday: 3:30-5:30 pm Girls - 5:00-7:00 pm Boys
Wednesday: 4:00-6:30 pm Both Boys and Girls
Thursday: 3:30-5:30 pm Both Boys and Girls and Meet The Lions at 6:00 pm
Friday: 3:30-5:30 pm Boys - 5:00-7:00 pm Girls
The first week of practices will be assessments and fundamental skill development. Competition teams will be determined by coaching staff and wrestle-offs weekly. An athlete always has the opportunity to compete for a Varsity spot the week of competition. It's not unusual for a wrestler to start the year as a Novice and compete the Regional Tournament.
What Each Athlete Needs for Practice:
IT’S MANDATORY TO WEAR CLEAN CLOTHES DAILY. Athletes will need to wear their own bottoms and optional sweatshirts. Jewelry is not allowed while wrestling, please remove jewelry prior to coming in for practice. This season athletes are required to wear the program provided practice shirts for practice @CGHS. Athletes will be issued t-shirts and are responsible to wash, maintain, and return them at the end of the season.
Water Bottle: We ask that all athletes come prepared to practice with their own water bottle, sharing will not be allowed. We have fountains where they can be refilled.
Wrestling shoes: Wrestling shoes are required for practice and competition. Boston Kent wrestled a tough tournament, pinning the #2 seed en-route to a 4th place finish. Week 2: November 25th - December 1st
Well done making some adjustments this week, very proud of the CG wrestling staff and those room leaders who filled a much needed role! And a special thank to the professionalism of the coaching staff!!
This week will be building on last weeks fundamentals in preparation for our first competitions in early December. This is a short week and many wrestlers will "certify" their weight class for the season, starting this Monday 11/25, More information can be found on the yellow button above titled ORegon Weight Monitoring Program. The weight monitoring program is an OSAA mandate which ensure that wrestlers safely descend in body weight as the season progresses. CGHS does not "cut weight" and it's important to note the distinction between old school "cuttin' weight" and our current model of weight descension. The coaching staff encourage wrestlers to manage weight through a healthy diet and hydration, good sleep routines and a little bit of discipline. Three trips to the buffet are too many!!
Staff sure appreciates those parents and athletes who'd showed up to represent at Meet the Lions and more Winter sports calendars will be printed soon. I'll try to keep a stack in the wrestling room so our athletes can post them.
Just in case.. Registration again:
Before an athlete can practice they need to be registered on FamilyID (scroll down for a comprehensive set of instructions) and have an up to date physical on file in the office. Please do not bring your physical to the coaches, they need to be turned in to the athletic secretary Lena Twyman in the main office. Thursday: 3:30-6 pm
Friday: 4-5:30 pm and Meet The Lions at 6:00 pm
The first week of practices will be assessments and fundamental skill development. Competition teams will be determined by coaching staff and wrestle-offs. An athlete always has the opportunity to compete for a Varsity spot the week of competition. It's not unusual for a wrestler to start the year as a Novice and compete the Regional Tournament. The goal is to have athletes ready for competition on Dec. 5th.
What Each Athlete Needs for Practice:
Please make sure that all athletes have the following in order to be prepared for practices: Athletic clothing with no zippers or street shoes in the mat room. Jewelry is not allowed while wrestling, please remove jewelry prior to coming in for practice.
Water Bottle: We ask that all athletes come prepared to practice with their own water bottle, sharing will not be allowed. We have fountains where they can be refilled.
Cottage Grove T-Shirt: We ask that all athletes wear an unmodified Cottage Grove or plain t-shirt each day to practice. We have a couple available for anyone that need some and we will be doing a t-shirt order at Meet The Lions for those that need to stock up for the season. IT’S MANDATORY TO WEAR CLEAN CLOTHES DAILY. TAKE HOME SWEATY CLOTHES EVERY DAY AFTER PRACTICE. THIS IS TO HELP STAY GERM FREE AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE.
Notebook: We use notebooks to help track goals, quotes, and other various team information throughout the season. Each player will need to have their notebook with them at every practice and game throughout the season. NOTESBOOKS ARE PROVIDED BY THE COACHES.
**Head gear is not required to be purchased, team will provide. If an athlete has braces a mouth guard is required.
If you have any questions please feel free to reach out, I am happy to help out!
Meet The Lions:
On Friday, November 2nd, we will meet in the Main Gym for Parent night at 6:00 pm. Meet the Lions will follow directly.
Please make sure all aspects of registration are completed before we start official practices on November 18. If an athlete does not have everything completed, they may not be eligible to start practices/tryouts until they are completed.
