September 2026 – Laina Behrenbrinker has been awarded a fellowship for the AFMC Civilian Academic Degree Program (CADP) and is joining our research group!
July 2026 – Professor Schwartzentruber gave the plenary Graeme Bird Lecture on “Direct molecular simulation of hypersonic flow and gas-surface scattering for VLEO” at the 34th International Symposium on Rarefied Gas Dynamics, in Brisbane, Australia.
April 2026 – Professor Schwartzentruber has been awarded the Distinguished McKnight University Professorship at the University of Minnesota!

September 2025 – Professor Schwartzentruber gave the plenary Graeme A. Bird Keynote Lecture on “Direct molecular simulation: How DSMC has improved CFD for hypersonics” at the Direct Simulation Monte Carlo and Applications Conference in Santa Fe, NM.
May 2025 – Dr. Erik Torres’ and Professor Schwartzentruber’s paper on “Characteristic Vibrational and Rotational Relaxation Times for Air Species from First-Principles Calculations” published in Journal of Thermophysics and Heat Transfer, has been selected by the Editor-in-Chief as an Editor’s Choice article.

January 2023 – Dr. Thomas Gross’ and Professor Schwartzentruber’s collaborative paper on "Near-Body Measurements in Hypersonic Wedge Flows in the T5 Reflected Shock Tunnel by Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy", presented AIAA Scitech 2023, was selected as the outstanding paper by the Ground Testing Technical Committee (GTTC).
April 2022 – Dr. Erik Torres, Eric Geistfeld, and Professor Schwartzentruber’s paper, “Direct molecular simulation of rovibrational relaxation and chemical reactions in air mixtures" has been chosen as the 2022 AIAA Thermophysics Best Professional Paper.
